I've found both of these descriptions in the DMG section
"Any creature that can understand a written language can read the arcane script on a scroll and attempt to activate it."
"If the spell is on your class’s spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible."
They seem contradictory to me so which is correct?
There are general use magic scrolls, which anyone can use, and then there are spell scrolls, which you can only use if the spell is on your class' spell list. The general use scrolls are things like the Scroll of Protection.

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
A caster may attempt to use any scroll that uses the same core magical energy they use for their spells. Arcane casters can attempt to cast any arcane scroll, Divine can attempt to cast any divine scroll.
If the spell is of a higher level than their current maximum spell level there is a DC 10+spell level vs Arcana/Religion/Nature. If the scroll is an up cast version use that spell level.

Thanks very much. Just seems weird when there is only one other scroll unless I'm missing some from a different adventure book I've not purchased.
I think my Beastmaster Ranger will just go looking for a Druid rather than the scroll. He's after the spell Awaken for his companion.
Well there's a bit of an issue with this:
Depending on the weight you put into the Sage Advice information: JC says the spell needs to be in your class list.
I play a bit of a houserule with mine:
