We've made a change to how the Ranger class feature "Favored Enemy" is implemented on D&D Beyond. This has been done to resolve an issue where the feature wasn't functioning correctly.
All of your Favored Enemies will now display correctly on your character sheet.
Additionally, the OCF (Optional Class Feature), presented in the Tasha's Cauldron of Everything sourcebook, "Favored Foe" was unable to function correctly, due to the way Favored Enemy had been implemented. This change also resolved that issue.
IMPACT ON YOUR RANGER CHARACTER(S)
1st-5th level.
You will need to reselect the additional language that is associated with your Favored Enemy.
6th+ level.
As well as reselecting the additional language associated with your 1st level pick of Favored Enemy, you will need to reselect the favored enemy and associated language granted at 6th level and 14th level (if relevant).
WHY HAS THIS HAPPENED?
Since the early days of D&D Beyond, the dev teams have worked hard to build tools that allow us to model all of the content in the Dungeons & Dragons game. There have been limitations to those tools however, especially earlier on in beta, when the core classes were built.
One of the more frequent issues reported to us over the lifetime of D&D Beyond is, "My Ranger character levelled up to 6th, selected their new Favored Enemy and now I can't see my 1st level pick on my character sheet."
When resolving issues, we have always stuck to a principle of being 100% non-destructive to characters, meaning that we won't implement a fix, if doing so would break someone's character in any way. We have always felt this was important - that our users need to be able to trust that their characters are safe with us.
With this Ranger issue, we spotted an opportunity to resolve the problem, using the more up-to-date tools, but with a small cost - having to reselect some of the options for that feature. We believe that this cost was worthwhile, to resolve the issue, as previously players of Ranger characters couldn't see the options that had been selected anyway.
WHAT ABOUT FIXING OTHER CLASSES/FEATURES?
Our intention and commitment remains that your characters are safe on D&D Beyond. This does not mean that we're going to be regularly making changes that invalidate your current character choices. However we felt the positives of this update far outweighed the negatives for this change. We hope we gave enough warning before the change that people were ready.
Depending on the feedback from the community on this issue resolution, we may take a look at other issues that could be resolved for a similar impact. Please let us know how you feel!
Great! Keep up the good work!
Awesome work! :) Not sure if it should go here or in a bug thread but on my players ranger MOnstrosities doesn't appear in the drop down list of foes to pick.
For me 'beasts' isn't showing up. Was 'monstrosities' your player's original Level 1 choice? If so, maybe the list for some reason skips the existing level 1 choice.
Same here. I tried to fix my Ranger, but Beasts was not an option. It still shows on my character sheet, but I can't fix it in the creator.
it was, but they now can't pick their language again as that then gives them 2 favoured foes (as i would need to pick another to get the language back on). These are good changes but seems somethings gone wonky in the implementation.
Not able to select Humanoids anymore!
Unable to select monstrosities, my first level previous pick, but was still prompted to pick a new enemy
As others mentioned, some creature types cannot be selected. I have a 7th level ranger which, if I am reading the rules correctly, should give me two choices of Favored Enemy. I do have two choices, but I can't select fiends. And if I look at the character sheet I have 3 fields there instead of two and one is occupied by Fiends, which are not selected anywhere I could find. So it seems that the sheet remembers my choice from 1st level, while allowing me too choose again.
Fey are not showing on my favored enemy selection list which is what my character had selected previously at 1st level.
I realized it's still showing on my character sheet under traits and features that I've selected Fey however my language proficiency is missing and it's asking me to select another favored enemy even though I should only have the one.
Yep! Me too...
Everyone commenting on the missing options from the drop-down menu – it's been posted as a new bug thread and that seems to be where Lauren is responding, so probably best to move over to there: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/bugs-support/90737-issue-with-ranger-favored-enemy-update
Great!
Great fix. It is simple for us to reselect the missing choices. Thanks for the update.
Was this update supposed to fix the bug with Favored Foe that doesn't show the damage scaling based on character level? After making the required updates to my character, my sheet still displays Favored Foe like this: "The first time on each of your turns that you hit the favored enemy and deal damage to it, including when you mark it, you can increase that damage by [scalevalue - No level scale data available.]"
Hi Everyone! Thank you for your patience!
FYI if the Ranger issue with Favorite Enemy should be fixed! Please refresh your character sheets and repick your favorite enemy info and it should all work as expected! If there is still an issue please post a link to your character sheet!
The issue with Favored Foe's snippet generating an error message is a separate issue than what we were working on with this update, and is still being tracked and worked on through the Tasha's Issue Thread: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/bugs-support/87774-tashas-cauldron-of-everything-issues-and-support
Thank you again!
Thank you! Keep up the great work!
this is useless ranger is the worst class so no one even had a ranger to begin with (I'm joking rangers are cool even if they are a bit underpowered)
Thanks again!
Thank you! It was annoying to only see my second favored enemy and not the first once I leveled up. The having to reselect them is a very minor inconvenience, IMHO, to fix this issue. Again, thank you!
I don't mind having to make reselections, but it would have been nice to have preserved the previous selections somehow, in case we forgot!
