Don't get me wrong, players updates are good, but when could we see some updates on the DM side of things? Combat tracker, possibility to generate encounters directly from the adventure text etc? These are quality of life improvement that impact on the dungeon master, who often pays for the content the players play for free...
Thank you, and apologizes for the OT.
I had.
Maybe I'm biased: because we don't use digital rolls in my campaign, even playing by distance (we tried different methods and it only slowed down play); still: in a typical game (currently playing Waterdeep Dragon Heist) I have about 20 web browser pages opened:
- 4 D&DBeyond's pages for the character sheets of my players;
- ~ 3 D&DB pages of the current adventure;
- 2 pages of encounters;
- additional eventual D&DB pages for specific maps, illustrations, specific monsters, spells, and items descriptions;
- the google meet page with the actual chat.
In a separate instance of the web browser, I have:
- the campaign calendar;
- the overall map of Waterdeep;
- a list of shops, temples, taverns, other business venues, and points of interest;
- a list of ready made NPCs;
- a list of factions and expanded sidequests;
- a couple of PDF books with color stuff, for instance things about the Trollskull Manor pertinent to the campaign;
- a random NPC generator for fun
- a Google presentation tab, with a grid map for encounters, when we need more than theatre of the mind.
Additionally I have the Discord app open, in case I need to share visual aid or message a particular player, a text app with my notes for the session, and a music app to provide the accompaniment.
It might seem excessive, and during a session maybe I access only 70% of the pages, and I improvise a lot. But distance playing is already prone to confusion and hiccups, so I prefer at least having the option to have stuff I would reasonably use ready; in a campaign as this which is more open than most in particular.
I'd look forward to solution to simplify the setup, and animated digital dice to run in a specific tab really go in the opposite direction to me.
I understand that probably I don't represent the needs or tastes of most of the DMs, or the business interests of D&DBeyond, but I find somewhat frustrating to see more attention to other venues than the making of content more readily accessible, (encounter builder and trackers are in beta limbo since ages, with the latter still buggy and lacking beatures; the "create encounter from adventure text" feature is not talked anymore that I know of since a year?, character sheets and inventory management could use a polish, and the desktop menu is cluttery, not even taking in consideration the listing of not purchased books or double entries because of localizations).
There's much to love in D&DBeyond, but it could be easier to use, and more useful, even without colorful dice, thanks.
Since DnDBeyond isn't DM appropriate yet, I indulge you to try out OneNote for building your campaign. Watch at some videos or check blogs of how to properly use it as a campaign planner. It is actually pretty amazing.
And let's pray that some time soon, we DMs get some more love too.
serious question :) did you think I was complaining too much?
I know some use OneNote for this, and I tried too, but having invested as much as I have on D&DBeyond, I feel I should stick with it and hope for the best.
Our job as clients is to complain. DnDBeyond is an amazing tools, but still needs more. So complaining is the way to go, in order for it to evolve.
P.S. I also strongly agree that it needs more work on the DM perspective.
Some DM Tools could be a useful feature. For example, I purchased the Source book bundle but don't want Acquisitions Incorporated content to be available to some of my campaigns. Sourcebook switches (like those we have for adventure sourcebooks in Content Management) could be a great option to solve this issue.
Also, some of us would be more than interested in purchasing bigger (more expensive) licenses for additional content sharing. I now run 10 campaigns a week but can only share content with 5 and am willing to PAY for the other 5 (or more). D&D has exploded and DMs like myself are in ever growing demand. Help us please.
You run TEN campaigns a WEEK??!! How do you have time for planning, let alone playing all of that?? Don't get me wrong, I wish I could, but with life in general I barely find time to prepare for my ONE weekly game I run!! Kudos to you, I'm super jealous!!!
This is my full time (well paid) job and has been for 5 years now. Never looked back my friend, living the dream. This game's been a part of my life since 1982 and finally got to make a living out of it. Prep? Yes, more time than my wife probably wishes and I 3D print my own figures which consumes a fair bit of time too (paint them too). Each game is only 2-3 hours but fun-packed with the occasional 8-hour game thrown in. Sometimes you gotta quit the rat-race and just go for it but don't get me wrong, I became financially secure first (although I make as much now as a DM as I did as a well-paid high-tech engineer in my previous life but it took a few years to get here). DnDBeyond has certainly eased up the administration part of the work but still feels a little short in some areas as I mentioned in my post. Oh, sometimes I run a couple of extra games at the weekends for fun (unpaid) if my wife allows ;-)
Itching to be a player again some day though ?
That is awesome! Living the dream, indeed! Good luck to you, and more so to your players!! ;)
hi
You might be able to cut down on some of your tabs by using this: https://github.com/TeaWithLucas/DNDBeyond-DM-Screen
Personally I want the campaign management improved. Right now if I run a different "game" with the same group of players then I need to activate and deactivate the characters.
Beautiful and tremendously useful. Thanks mate!! Hope they make an official Screen for the site, one day!!!
