We’ve just leveled up in a big way.
Dungeons & Dragons and D&D Beyond have always felt like a part of the same family. That’s why we’re excited to announce that D&D Beyond is formally joining Wizards of the Coast, bringing together two teams that eat, breathe, and sweat for this game and continue to strive to make D&D easy to run, exciting, and accessible to all.
You (and by you, we mean the 10 million users that have been on this adventure with us since 2017!) are probably wondering what kind of change might happen as a result of these two teams coming together, so let’s make this clear: Wizards of the Coast has no plans to stop supporting D&D Beyond. Ever. The purchases you’ve made, the characters you’ve created, and the campaigns you’ve run aren’t going anywhere.
You’ve probably got a million questions about what comes next. What we can say for sure is that we’re excited for what the future holds as we dig in with our new partners. We wish you could see the big stupid grins we’ve all been walking around with. This is truly an incredible time for all of us, and it really feels like there’s no limit to what we can accomplish for our players. Remember, the key factor that makes this partnership perfect is that these teams want one thing: to make your experience playing the World’s Greatest Roleplaying Game even better.
If you’ve been on this journey with us for a while, we’re so glad you’re here. If you’re brand new and clicked on the site today to figure out what the big news was all about, welcome! Remember to register for a free account! (Sorry, couldn’t help ourselves.) We’ll have more to share with you throughout the year, so tune in to the Dev Update, which airs on Twitch on Thursdays at 10 a.m. PT, and check out new content right here on dndbeyond.com.

My only question is what happens if you already have an account on both. Do they merge together?
Probably not unless you already merged them, they would probably both become d&d beyond and WoTC
I bought a cd. Does that entitle me to the mp3? No. I bought a Xbox video game. Does that entitle me to the ps5 version? No. This is an option, not a requirement. Giving away money would be stupid if WOTC. Hope they continue to sell the books and offer digital content as a bonus to those that want to use it.
I think this is very good news! A concern about purchasing books on DNDBeyond (and I have spent a good portion of my gaming budget here) always felt a bit risky... what if DDB went bankrupt and the site disappeared? Now, it is going to be part of a very important division of Hasbro. This gives me more confidence/comfort that the purchases are secure.
I have also long hoped that DDB would build a VTT or develop more streamlined integration with one. There is a real chance that, with WotC/Hasbro being the new owners soon, that the funding will be available for either an acquisition of a very good VTT or building one for full integration into DDB.
While discount codes would be very nice, it is highly unlikely that buying the hardcover book will get free access here (or buying it on DDB will get a free hardcover copy). WotC/Hasbro was getting a royalty on our purchases here... they spent ~146 million dollars to buy DDB. If they now give it away for free if you buy the hardcover book, then they would be paying ~146 million to lose the royalties they would have gotten. Given that Hasbro is a public company, I don't think their shareholders would be very happy about that... :)
If they do give discount codes on hardcover books, then I wonder how many complaints there would be for people that had already purchased the hardcover book and didn't get the discount code?
One downside is that the amazing tools of DDB and the team that built it and continues to make improvements is NOT likely going to support non -DND systems or games. I had hoped they might support some other systems, and even other d20 products (such as Mutants and Masterminds 3E). Hero Lab does a good job with character creation on a wide range of systems, but does not offer the game management that we get at DDB (at least as far as I know).
To me... the benefits and potential greatly outweigh the loss of the *potential* that DDB would have ever expanded outside of D&D.
Happy gaming everyone...:)

I hope DDB does not go the VTT route, there is so much other stuff I want them to do and, I prefer to be able to pick my own VTT to use, also building there own VTT will upset all those who have time invested in Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Foundry etc.
What I want them to do is build a dedicated API gateway that all those VTT's can integrate to and slowly bring to an end all the other licensing deals, meaning that I can buy everything on DDB and then use my VTT of choice, without needing to worry about paying for the material again on that VTT (currently if I want to use Roll 20 orFantasy Grounds I would need to buy the PHB 3 times, once physically and then here and on the VTT).
If wizards was going to make another acquisition I would much prefer something like World Anvil, or build that kind of capability into DDB, having more then just a single notes page for my campaign.
all things money are all things corporate. DNDBeyond was a distributor. The site will more than likely maintain as a distribution center, not an extension of WoTC. Which means they will still be charging separate for digital v physical. The main reason they want to make the purchase is due to profit revenue, WoTC/Hasbro are not making the purchase for altruistic reasons. They want more $$.
I would not celebrate this until all the dust settles and we see if it is a weal or woe for all players. My money is on Woe.
Have we received an answer on this yet?
I hope now it's under the same name, that there could be a way that whichever physical/ digital copy you bought, there was a registration code (think Sims when buying the games),
But that the code was half price or something when buying the same book under the other version, again via proof by registering the codes..
But at the same time (though it's a pain when you buy one time, but then for the second) it is still money to the company,
and no one makes us buy both, we do choose to buy more than one version, if ya get me.
I don't see authors doing the same for their physical / digiital / audiobook versions but we can choose to buy more than one version.
I mean I'm not sure if even I'd offer that same idea if it was my products being sold tbh... Hmm. x
I would love to know if you buy a hard copy book if Wizards will give a digital code for dnd beyond. That would be sweeet.
This acquisition makes me wonder if PHB, DM Guide, and Monster Manual will be base-kit now, since it's been almost a decade since release. I still bought 'em on here, but... It would be nice for the players that use this for free, to have more than one path for a character to go in their class.
Hopefully this means DNDBeyonf will actually add new features and not just something silly like a backpack to the character sheet.
So will WotC own my characters or Homebrew Magic Items, Sub-Classes, Backgrounds, Monsters?
If they like something can they just take it and use in other products?
I mean I am pretty sure you don't "own" anything you create on DDB (might be wrong there) and there is nothing to stop Wizards looking and using something cool from here anyway, it would be very hard for you to prove that it wasn't an original idea they had had that was similar to yours. But in reality I think this is something we don't really need to worry about, our homebrew stuff really probably, no matter how good we think it is, is very unlikely to be good enough or balanced enough to be good enough for Wizards,
The Encounter builder development and improvements have been really good, the backpack is also a good addition, my party are now using it to actually track whats in the bag of holding. I think it is also underestimated the amount of work required to port every new physical release over to DDB in time for the release date, new subclasses, spells etc, and there have been a glut of books released recently, and also the work being done in the background to implement the new Monsters of the Multiverse rules etc. This does not allow for much spare time to build other unique items. That combined also with the work being done on the 2 mobile apps (and that is not an easy thing, depending on how they are written you are either writing 2 distinct apps, one for android and one for IOS in 2 different languages, or building it in react native which has it's own unique issues), means that actually lots is being delivered, you just might not realise or appreciate it because it isn't specific to what you are doing right now.
:D
Now make a Virtual Tabletop for us to use here instead of having to use extensions! =D
Ok so we don't need an account on WoTC to continue using D&D Beyond?
Book give codes
Will WoTC continue to Honor any Permanent Discounts previously offered by DnD Beyond? For example the Legendary Bundle Discount that applies for all new purchases.
Please I hope they don't if they do there is no reason to continue supporting other VTT's and many of us play more then just DnD so a DnD exclusive VTT that is not free will just make me stop playing DnD
