The public beta for digital dice launched yesterday on D&D Beyond, and thousands of fans have already rolled millions of times to see that first "20" land on their screens.
The D&D Beyond team has taken the task seriously of helping people across the world play games and connect with one another during the unprecedented times of this pandemic. Knowing that we can bring even the smallest amount of joy in the midst our global situation provides a real sense of purpose, and we appreciate the reports of happiness brought about by these pixels bouncing across your character sheets more than you know.
Starting today, you will be able to unlock new dice sets for your collection, including the colorful 'Pigment Pack' and a fully-animated 'Mythic Set.' You can check out both in the Marketplace. There will be plenty more where they came from in the days ahead.
We are also acutely aware of recent events that call into stark focus the systemic racial injustice that continues to exist in the world. We understand that messaging from companies often lands hollow without action, and we do not wish to remain silent in the face of this. For the next week (through June 9th), D&D Beyond will donate 50% of all proceeds from digital dice sets to the Black Lives Matter movement.
We stand in solidarity with the Black community against racism, discrimination, and senseless acts of violence.
Two things:
1) They are supporting a cause that needs supporting right now, and not later, and
2) This feature does speed your game by reducing the math your players have to do.
"Proceeds" here mean all the money coming to us. This is what I shared above.
Wording on things like this is sometimes tough, but the idea is with dice sales this week, we are donating our profits after our costs are paid. I assure you, the intent is to get as much money as we can quickly to those that need it.
Thanks!
Will these dice be available only thru the 9th? I won't be able to get them yet, I won't be able to have the funds til much later. I would hate to miss these dice. Its unfair that you guys would spring this out & give a short timeline to buy. A little more of a warning would have been nice.
We appreciate the feedback, and I share the desire to see the other features you mention come to fruition on DDB.
The thing is, we have multiple teams working on multiple things. Digital dice is one of those things, and the other features you mention are handled by other teams. I personally wish that we could throw all of our people onto a single feature to make it happen quicker, but the truth is, software development doesn't really work that way - more people doesn't really translate to moving faster. (The idea behind the concept of "The Mythical Man-Month.")
I can assure you that those other elements are being developed, and we'll continue to do our best to get them in the community's hands as soon as we can.
Thanks!
Everyone can use digital dice - we are in the public beta phase and it is not limited to subscribers.
Thank you guys, so much!!!
Is there a way to gift sets of dice to other accounts? I'd like to buy multiple if possible (ie. a set for each of my players)
I'm proud of you guys for taking a stand and thank you for speaking out against injustice.
Thanks for this one guys. This is really great of you.
I LOVE the Nat 20 animation on the mythic dice! I kinda wish the Nat 1 had an animation unique to it as well that was more foreboding, but that's okay. Still an AMAZING dice set compared to everything else that's been released.
Are dice sets shared along with the other campaign resources?
I live in South Minneapolis, 4 blocks from where George Floyd was murdered. The fires and destruction is the city screaming and seizing in pain.
What doesn't get representation in the news is the community coming together. Thousands of people cleaning up neighborhoods that have been razed, thousands of people peacefully protesting all over the city, community members coordinating medical care and donations to help those that have disproportionately effected, and neighborhoods all over the city banding together to protect and care for each other. This brings me to tears more often than I cry for the places I love going up in flames.
People > Property. Black Lives Matter.
Staying silent is picking the side of the oppressor, so thank you so much for being on the right side of history.
Love these dice, but $15 is way too much.
Good for D&D Beyond...too many companies just pay lip service to issues instead of doing something about them. Glad to see this one break the mold.
I'd suggest editing this clarification into the post as well! Not everyone reads the comments. Tweets can't be edited, but I'm sure you can edit these kinds of posts on your own site at least :)
Thanks again!
Great product and great cause!
We're going to use the initial wording, as saying something like "all profits" will likewise invite as many (or more) questions (things along the lines of "how do you account for profits," etc.). Using the more specific threshold on proceeds at least confirms at least that much.
Mainly trying to explain the spirit and intent of what we're doing here in the comments. As I've said elsewhere, we're not going to be perfect in our response and we will make mistakes, but we would still rather try to do something rather than simply post an image and call it a day.
Thanks!
I would really like it if DDB stayed out of politics. On either side. I don't want my money going to a political cause. I just want to game. Can't we just shut up & game? Why does it always have to come to politics? D&D used to be about gaming. Nothing divisive. No cause. Just a bunch of gamers eating pizza & drinking soda, slaying dragons. I don't even recognize gaming anymore.
Live in your bubble if you like but this IS political
1. Human lives aren't political.
2. If you don't want to support the cause, wait until next week to buy them.
