You devoted yourself to service in a temple, either nestled in a town or secluded in a sacred grove. There you performed rites in honor of a god or pantheon. You served under a priest and studied religion. Thanks to your priest’s instruction and your own devotion, you also learned how to channel a modicum of divine power in service to your place of worship and the people who prayed there.

Posted Sep 3, 2024Not great stats, but I like that any character with a priestly background can use some divine magic now.

Posted Sep 4, 2024What happened to the flavor for each background? Has that been stripped out as well? How does removing content make the game better?

Posted Sep 6, 2024Yup, the backgrounds in here seem to be missing the appropriate feats - in Acolyte's case: Magic Initiate (Cleric) - as well as the ability score increases. The feat is mentioned in the table of Backgrounds, but not in this description, and the ability score increases are missing from both. This may be related to the fact that we can't choose ability score increases when making a homebrew background, either...

Where are the Ability Scores, where are the Feats? Why does this page only have the last 3 of the 5 things a background should have?

Posted Oct 17, 2024Why doesn't it say here what it says if you look at the full 'free rules' book? It should say here as well for easy access that your ability score improvement is either the usual +2 and +1 to two of the three stats listed (of your choosing) or +1 to all three

Posted Nov 14, 2025Allows you to get Bless or Cure Wounds as a Wizard. Wizard that's an Acolyte could've served a temple or shrine dedicated to a god of knowledge or magic, and that's how they got access to materials for studying magic. Think of Candlekeep, which is a library that worships Deneir and Oghma (god of writing). Maybe you served the Candlekeep shrine, and since you're basically one of the Avowed you get access to the vast collection of books in Candlekeep.

Posted Mar 8, 2026PHB 2024 printed does not reflect in the app. Magic initiate as a feat for this background as a cleric on the app let's you choose only from clerics spell list. In the Book it allows for cleric, druid or wizard spell list.

Posted Mar 10, 2026No, this is correct.
The backgrounds that provide the Magic Initiate feat each specify a specific class list you have to choose for them (Acolyte gets Cleric, Guide gets Druid, Sage gets Wizard). This is listed in the Player's Handbook descriptions of the backgrounds in both the print and digital versions.
Acquiring the Magic Initiate feat through any other means does allow you to choose.
