With this update you can now add any creature stat block to your character sheet in the new 'Creatures' section!
Since launch, we've seen players come up with many creative ways to reference monsters that were relevant to their character within the digital sheet. We've now made it much easier to add creatures to your sheet that puts all of the detailed DDB monster information at your fingertips, in addition to updating the monster stat block information automatically when game rules would affect them. This means adding creatures to wildshape, beast companion and familiar groups will directly influence the monster stat block to help you understand how to utilize the creature to its full potential.
We added ways to interact with your creatures such as being able to customize and track hit points.
Another system we are implementing with this update is "creature rules". Every class feature, racial trait, and feat can possess these rules, and you can use them in your own homebrew creations. Every rule that is added contributes to what monsters are available to add to a specific creature group. Creature rules are how we describe to the wildshape creature group that you can add "beasts of 1/4 CR or lower that can't have flying or swimming speeds". The rules for each group will always add to the available list. This means that if you had a rule of "beasts" and a rule of "max 1 CR" , your final list would have all monsters that are max 1 CR or any monster that is a beast which could have a CR well above 1. We did add an "escape hatch" to following these rules. If any creature group has rules, they will have a checkbox that says "Filter Using <groupName> Rules" and can be unchecked to open the list to all the monsters that are available to you.
Please note that the Creatures section is intended as an easy-to-access reference - the idea is not to have full-blown temporary effects change your character sheet yet. I'll let BadEye share more on that kind of functionality when the time is right.
We are also aware that while wildshape is working fully as intended, the ranger's companion and familiar do not yet have any adjustments in the "Actions" sections of their stat block due to the way Actions are currently stored. As we begin development on the upcoming encounter/ monster builders, that data will be parsed and we will be able to manipulate it better in the Creatures section. In the meantime, we provide feature callouts to remind players of the ranger's proficiency bonus or the fact that a familiar can't attack.
We know this update has been eagerly-awaited, and this is just the starting point. As always, share your feedback in the forums and we will continue to improve the new Creatures section over time.
Thanks!
Woohoo! Druids all over the Site, rejoice!
Great update - thank you, all! Looking forward to using and testing.
Great, now my players are going to start gathering pets!
Any way for a necromancer to add a damage bonus from Undead Thralls?
Please report any bugs to this thread.
Thanks!
Yes!!! This is a much needed update.
I was just wishing for something like this last week to keep track of my pseudodragon companion. Thank you!
Could this be eventually added to the PDF export as well? Thanks, this looks amazing.
This is AMAZING!
Is it possible to add to Creature Rule a level override? So at level x the rule can change slightly?
YAY! So excited! Thank you!!
You all are awesome. Thank you!
Nice! Are the creature stat blocks included in the character sheet export?
Update is great and really useful! I do wish you can sort or group by cr without searching/using a filter for wild shape, or at least show the cr in the list form.
YYYAAAAASSSSSSSSS
Very nice feature.
One improvement request already: Spell such as Find Steed conjures a creature with improved stats (such as a minimum INT of 6, for find Steed). It would be nice to add the option to change the creatures ability scores also in the customize feature.
It was the first thing I tried to do when adding my Paladin's mount. :)
Nice thanks!
Is there a way to add the Creature Rules to a spell? Like for Conjure Animal we could add quick filter for "Beast CR 2", "Beast CR 1" etc...
This is amazing, going to be very useful for my players to track their pets and mounts.
One question: Will carrying capacity or an inventory-like system be added to Creatures, notably mounts or even beasts of burden? My players currently have a huge supply of rations for their Chultan expedition, and considering the weight of rations and the encumbrance we’ve said “the anklyosaurs are carrying them all.” Would be cool to be able to add them into the creature section for easy tracking and management.
This is a lifechanger. Way to go, Dndbeyond. You guys are KILLING IT!
This is love, but I do have one question. Does it appear on the exported sheet? I can't find it if it does and I think it absolutely should be.
This is a long awaited and much appreciated update. Thanks a lot.
Finally my owl familiar Owl'ivia and my air elemental Cyclonis can come to life on my character sheet.
Does this (or if not, will this) meld well with Lycanthropy rules?
(Edit: Forgot to mention how awesome this is! Thanks for that!)
