The Player Handbook’s three Ability Score methods are now fully supported. We have always supported Standard Array and Point Buy, but now you can roll your dice, in the Character Builder, to determine your Ability Scores. Just select the “Manual/Rolled” option in the “Choose a Generation Method” and the Dice Roll Groups functionality will be available.
Now you can always roll your IRL dice and manually enter the result, but if you want to use your spiffy D&D Beyond Digital Dice, you can. Listed below is a summary of the functionality of this delightful little feature.
Dice Roller in the builder:
* You can now toggle to enable/disable Digital Dice from the HOME section of the character builder, as well as the Preferences pane sidebar in the Character Sheet.
* When Digital Dice are enabled on a character, the Dice Fab is now available for custom/adhoc rolling from every section of the Character Builder.
* When on the ABILITIES section of the Builder, and you select the “Manual/Rolled” option for ability score selection, You will now be able to interact with the “Dice Roll Groups” collapsible UI. (if Digital Dice is set to disabled when you arrive at this section, you will see a prompt to enable Digital Dice which presents the “Dice Roll Groups” if enabled.
The Dice Roll Groups UI:
* ADD GROUP: allows you to create up to 10 groups of up to 6 rolls in each group.
* RESET GROUP: resets the entire group as a whole
* APPLY ABILITY SCORES: applies any scores that have been rolled and set ( rolls with totals but no Stat assigned do not unset any current scores, but rolls with Stats assigned will overwrite any previously assigned value)
* DELETE GROUP: delete entire group
* ROLL: Each Roll uses the 4d6kh3 roll rule and activates the Digital Dice library to roll and provide roll data
* Each Roll displays the Roll Total and the values of each d6 that was rolled, displaying the “kept” die value in blue and the “discarded” die value in grey
* STAT: After a Roll is made, you can now select an Ability Stat from the dropdown attached to that Roll
* Once Rolls and Stat selections are made ( at least 1 and up to 6 Rolls with a Stat ) You can use the APPLY ABILITY SCORES button to set your scores. You will see a blue border flash on any scores that have been set.
This is a great step forward. Thank you!
I was delightfully surprised to see this a few hours ago while I was making a new character. Love it so much and what a wonderful early Christmas present. Thanks so much for the hard work from everyone on the DndBeyond team & Happy Holidays! \o/
Thanks! This is great.
Thank you for listening to the community Q&A during the developer updates on thursday! This is an amazing feature!
Awesome! <3
Is there a way DMs and other players in your party can see your rolls yet? Even a Chrome extension or something that taps into this?
Is there a possibility of showing the total amount of roll groups created prior to a group being used?
As a DM I would like to know that it took the player 9 attempts to get three rolls of 18.
Would it be possible to have these rolls WITHOUT having the dice on? I find the on screen dice distracting, annoying and slow, but having the buttons to generate the numbers without the fancy but (personally) annoying effects would be more than welcome.
The dice are so cool! I am still getting the hang of remembering to use them but that is just me. The design of them are really cool and you can easily tell which is which.
A great addiotion would be to make groups with the rolls you made IRL so you could get 6 scores and then apply them like it is done when rolling the digital dice.
You can already assign the numbers you rolled with your IRL dice...
Definitely seconding this. Saving the groups is great for showing a DM that your stats are legit, but the way it is now, there is no way to verify that a Player didn't roll 50 times for those stats. Also, there is an issue (I'm not sure if intended or not) with copying a character and the dice groups not being saved.
Wow I completely missed this feature being released.
Any chance we can have a total for the dice rolls listed? I let players reroll if they are under 70, and adding can be hard sometimes :p
The randomness is created from the 3d dice rolling on the desktop using a physics engine. That being said I am pretty sure the team have taken this feedback on board and are investigating options for dice rolling without the visual elements.
You can also use avrae in discord to roll stats and then manually enter.
The command is !randchar
I know this topic is (too) old, but this is still a "problem"
Even as a Player, I agree to this point.
I'm an honest player AND I like to roll my digital dice for my characters. I also like to prepare multiple character beforehand, but I don't want to wait to roll stats.
So, with my characters already prepared, DMs would need to trust that I haven't rerolled the dice a dozen times, or I would need to reroll with them watching.
I don't have a problem being watched rolling, but again, I like to create multiple characters up front, so... a reset+deletion count for the dice groups would be great.
Though, copying a character without AS and then deleting the whole copied character would still forgo this. So, tricky people can still reroll a dozen times unwatched.
