(I don't understand how search works for the forums. I turn up nothing most of the time just - like this time, and yet, newcomers keep stumbling upon ancient threads to resurrect somehow. *shrug*)
The elder sign is a ward or spell against bad stuff in the H.P. Lovecraft lore (Cthulhu Mythos, Great Old Ones, Outer Gods), but there are four descriptions accepted in the expanded lore, two by Lovecraft and two by two other authors. Two of those, one by Lovecraft and one by Derleth, are the most popular with Derleth's being the most popular between those two.
Using the poll, which is the "correct" one for your story purposes or simply for your preference? I won't state which is by whom if you don't already know. That's easily found with Google-fu.
Using the thread, do you have another that you prefer or an explanation why you prefer what you chose? Have you used one or encountered one in your stories? If so, how did it fit in the stories? I wanna know more!

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
While I like the star-with-eye symbol, don’t get me wrong, I really appreciate the tree symbol as the Elder sign. You see, the GOOs as aberrations (see my D&D speak coming in) are the antithesis of our reality - and to be a little more specific are the antithesis of what we would call “nature” or “life”. I think of it as the two “energies” (natural and eldritch) as cancelling.
The star-with-eye symbol to me reflects eldritch energy, which is why I can’t think of it as deterring the GOOs - in fact, I see it as strengthening their energy. How do you fight energy that is unnatural? With nature, with the symbol that reflects nature and life. That’s why the tree symbol works as the Elder Sign for me.
