Hi. DnD players gather gold and silver in the game so does anyone else here do that in real life too? I think physical silver coins feel like real life loot.
Given that a 1/10 ounce gold coin (smaller than a dime) is several hundred dollars, any reasonable collection is over the budget of most gamers, though you could fake it with a collection of quarters and golden dollar coins.
Chocolate coins. Wrapped in silver and gold foil. Better in every respect.
I have actually use these as physical currency in my game. We have gold, silver and bronze. When you buy something or spend money in the game, you have to have enough chocolate coins. I have also used jelly babies and other things for the bad guys, and the player whose character kills them, gets to eat them.
The only problem with the chocolate coins, is that the players tend to eat them. You can't really not as they melt anyway, so even if you don't they're just a waste. Meaning I am having to constantly buy a lot of them. I get around this by buying them from a cash and carry in bulk, but its still an extra expense, so I only use chocolate coins for special events, and have a large collection of plastic coins for general purpose use.
I also have fake precious gems. They are actually just cheap coloured crystals, but they feel real in the hand. My players love getting actual physical loot like this.
Depending on who your players are and how well you know them though, you might experience some people stealing them.
Yes, nominal price of gold is high. 1 ounce (28 grams) silver coin costs about 40 $ at the moment.
However, when you buy gold or silver you are not spending currency - you are just preserving it in different form. Currency (paper banknotes) are just promise of payment.
Governments and central banks always devalue the currency too much and it will lose purchasing power. Gold and silver have kept the purchasing power for some 5000 years. They always return to gold / silver standard after some political mess.
Precious metals are very valuable in real life as well as fantasy.

"A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."
— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
Sorry if this sounds like sale speech! I am very excited about precious metals at the moment so I want to tell about them to everyone. Not trying to sell anything.

A caffeinated nerd who has played TTRPGs or a number of years and is very much a fantasy adventure geek.
