I went with a gnome and decided to basically just build a suit of armor to be inside and control giving the ability to shoot spells while flying...you know...cuz 'merica.
I have only been playing 5e for about a year now, but armorer artificer that gets flight ASAP is definitely on my list of future characters. cuz....f*** yeah!
I feel like my artificer is more of an Ultron since they're a warforged. My warforged was actually originally a warlock, but still using the iron man thematic. Then armourer came along and it just fit the concept too well. To be fair, armourer is basically just the iron man subclass.
My svirfneblin artificer is only level 1, but when he becomes an artificer at level 3 his armor be flavored as a small earth elemental that surrounds his body (because in the lore, deep gnomes have an affinity for earth elementals), though I am also thinking of having his armor resemble a fire beetle.
Sure, I could make Iron Man with the Armorer. But I could make Mega Man X with the Ultimate Armor or the Flight Armor pretty easy there. Or perhaps Ultron. Or Dr. Doom, perhaps with a bit of multiclassing.

This is how I described my Goliath Armorer Artificer plans to my GM. I mean, it's not Iron Man. But it kinda is Iron Man. ;)

A Goliath as an Armorer would be more like Titanium Man but now my geekdom is showing.
