I’m going to play a battlesmith artificer in my next campaign. Instead of a steampunk aesthetic, my character will be a toy maker… Geppetto style.
I’m going to flavor her spells using different toys (a spinning top picturing a genie, a jack in a box, an aasimar/celestial rag doll…) and her steel defender will be a giant owlbear plush reinforced with metallic elements.
I might take the homonculus servant infusion but I struggle with the shape it will take. Here are some ideas I had: a bird shaped flying kite, a bird or bug shaped music box, a scale model of a zeppelin… but I’m not so convinced…
Any idea of a homonculus servant inspired by toys? Thanks for your help!
Depends on what kind of tech and creatures are already known in this Steampunk world.
Toys tend to resemble what is known in the world as something that enables skill-building (like a ping pong set), imagination (k'nect or other building sets, dolls, action figures), or reassurance (teddy bears, robotic baby seals).
What would this PC want to interact with given her backstory? Use that to detail the homunculus servant.
I envision a toy similar to a thread bare automaton that moves forward then bumps into something (dealing damage?) and turning right or left (50/50) 60 degrees and starting off in its new direction until it bumps into something else or ends its movement. This mimics some toys now and the old roombas. Have it take the shape of a mechanical bunny with a twitching nose and ears. Make it vibrant pink. With glowing malevolent eyes. Later add a flamethrower for special occasions.

(I’m French, sorry for my writing mistakes!)

I immediately imagined a constantly spinning spinning-top, giving off excited sparks when it is asked to cast a spell!
A puppet hanging on ethereally fading strings would be a cool but creepy option too.
