The roleplaying potential for attuning to sentient weapons is great. I am sure we all remember the funny scenes of Critical Role’s Grogtalking to the evil sword Craven edge. However artificers can get to even more fun by attuning to sentient weapons that their not supposed to thanks to magic item savant. By bypassing the class or race requirements you are essentially hacking the weapon and the weapon won’t like that. Imagine what the Whelm war hammer would say if a elf artificer attuned to it. Or imagine the tantrums a Docent would have if a non-warforged artificer would attune to it. Some sentient weapons can just choose to withhold their power from you like Blackstaff or Moonblades but your dm might allow you to use it if you are convincing enough or just straight up lie your pants off to the weapon. Maybe modify memory will work on them and you can just tell them that you convinced them that you should have them. Unfortunately there are plenty of sentient weapons that require an specific alignment and that is not covered by the class feature.
Magic item savant is a great feature and can be very powerful in combat depending on your DM but one must always think of the role play potential of any feature and what fun can be had outside of combat as well as in.
