tl/dr: Very low ability scores. DM wants me to stick with it. I want to propose to construct a mechanical mount to get my character on par with the rest of the party. Looking for ideas.
Just started a new campaign and I wanted to make a support melee artificer. But my ability scores are pretty bad. +3 to INT, +1 to CON, everything else 0. The rest of the party has huge stats leaving me a bit annoyed. My DM is a good friend and for whatever reason he wants me to stick with it. I'm an adult, so I'm game to see how it goes (maybe he's got something up his sleeve).
My main idea is to have my character develop a mechanical mount that provides him with abilities that will help him overcome his relative weakness. What are some fun/good ideas that I can suggest to my DM?
Need some more information to get an idea of where all you stand. Got your stats, but what level are you. What subclass are you or are planning to go? What is your creature size?
Thanks Mr. Fox! I'm level 1, we just started the campaign. I dont' really know what subclass to go for but this campaign is expected to have extremely slow leveling and character progress will largely be from item acquisition. And item acquisition is expected to come from completing personal achievements based on our characters and back stories. We have a good DM - is ok with rule-of-cool stuff and flexible with the rules.
We are a bit weak on the tanking situation so I was thinking about going for a armorer or battle smith. But I'm flexible and I really enjoy being a support class. I like being able to help others during battles but also want to be effective in non-battle roleplay situations.
Depending on your creature size, your idea may be either easy to do or more tricky to do. If you are a Small creature and went with the Battlesmith subclass, you'd be able to utilize your Steel Defender from the subclass as a mount. Otherwise, the matter of constructing a mechanical mount would be more something to work out with your DM as to the means of executing the idea, the resources necessary, and the time needed.
Depending, you might be able to work with your DM to reflavor Find Steed or Phantom Steed spells though neither are available by default for an Artificer nor does the class have a normal route to obtain either of these spells. Food for thought depending though with the campaign just starting, see where things go. You know your DM so they may already have something in mind for down the road that can ultimately benefit your character.

These are some good ideas. Thanks
Wow on this is great stuff. I love the idea of an armored suit.
