Okay, so there are two infusions for ranged weapons:
Returning Weapon: For thrown weapons(i.e. handaxe, spear, light hammer, etc.)
Repeating Shot: For weapons that launch projectiles(i.e. bows, crossbows, slings, etc.)
I am pretty sure I’m not the first guy to combine the idea of the Returning Weapon infusion with the Boomerang weapon. Admittedly it is useless if you miss(minus the +1 bonus), but it seems thematically appropriate. So I go to the infusions page and pull up Returning Weapon, and the only one of my weapons that appears is Light Hammer. Confused I pull up the boomerang page and see that, for some reason, it doesn’t have the Thrown property, only Ranged.
You throw boomerangs, that is how they work.
I then tried to get around this by trying the Repeating Shot infusion, admittedly it wouldn’t make sense, but since it already didn’t have the Thrown property…
And that didn’t work either.
In general, who thinks that it should have the Thrown property and be infusible with Returning Weapon, and who thinks that this should’t work?
I think the infusion should work IMO. But. the reason it does not have thrown is because itsa ranged weapon.
now i think a boomerang should be a melee weapon w/ a range and thrown instead. Because in fantasy boomerangs are also a weapon/club.
Strictly speaking, you could hit with it via improvised weapon status (which weirdly enough gives it the thrown property when it is improvised thrown) but that doesn't help a lot.
If I could. I'd have them be a simple melee weapon with Thrown and Versatile. So you could melee with it, throw it. But also double hand bash or throw (Sango!)
I think the reason why boomerangs don't have the Thrown property is because there is no mundane boomerang weapon in 5e. The closest thing is the Storm Boomerang from Princes of the Apocalypse and there the weapon properties are described in the item's description as opposed to being an entry in the weapons table.
My best guess is it was convenient for DnDBeyond's magic item system to just define a mundane boomerang with the same ranges and properties as the Storm Boomerang. In that description it doesn't mention the Thrown property at all so to keep parity with the books as much as possible DnDBeyond can't add it in. As a result it doesn't work well with things like Artificer infusions which came to 5e much later than Princes of the Apocalypse.
So ultimately, it's pretty much an oversight. Were they to include a mundane boomerang I'm pretty sure WoTC would give it the Thrown property.
If you're having problems with boomerangs without thrown on D&D Beyond at least two people have homebrewed versions that do have the thrown property. Search for Boomerang (thrown)

At that point they'd basically be a returning light hammer, but it would still be cool flavor wise.

Darts are ranged weapons and also have the thrown property.
Not having thrown on boomerangs sounds like just an oversight and a reasonable DM would treat it as such.
