I have written a character with the plan to have it be an octopus that has been given sentience through magic (awaken or something similar). I need help balancing the character. Currently, my idea is that the octopus would be in a mech suit shaped like a giant octopus. The octopus would be using the armorer subclass to achieve this. There are just a couple of things I have not figured out yet, which are:
What would happen if the octopus decided to use one of it's tentacles for an attack??
How big would the suit need to be (I am thinking large)?
And what would be the maintenance costs for something of that size?
Edit: Another question. What would be the ruling on breathing? Should I just assume there is a mechanical or magical system for oxygenation in the water?
My campaign is set in the Forgotten Realms and doesn't use guns.
So I am generally inexperienced with this sort of thing, but here is my answers to your questions:
Probably using the 'Grappling Appendages' from Simic Hybrid as a base, and probably modify with what your DM allows.
Large does seem to be the best choice. I don't know if RAW Armorer allows you to use armor you couldn't technically wear (with the octopus being tiny) but your DM should allow it.
Probably around the same amount required to make a Iron Golem (they are also the large size). I do not have the DMs Guide, so I don't know the actual amount, but some quick googling (or maybe you are someone you know has it) will probably give you the answer.
Hope this helped.
Edit: If by maintenance you meant repairing/fixing and not actually building it, large amounts of scrap metal+mending should work

For the tentacles maybe the Tentacle Rod? If you want it to be Beholder-esque then Belashyrra's Beholder Crown.

Studded Leather: He does exactly what I do
Natural Armor: But better
Thanks for the help! I will check out what you have told me about.
