I’m making an Artificer loosely inspired by my dad. He’s known for his strength but is also very intelligent. Currently I have a Battle smith/Eldritch Knight multi-class and got Sailor recommended for Eldritch Knight. While he’s bot a fan of the sailing per-say, he enjoys mechanical things and seems to have both street smarts and survival qualities.
Unfortunately, my current build of 8/14/14/17/10/10 for a Battle Smith doesn’t really fit the Athletics that Sailors get. Should I consider changing my stats or class to better fit, or should I change backgrounds instead? If the latter, to what?
You can pick up Armor of Magical Strength and Cap of Water Breathing for your Infusions and be a perfect sailor, not out of talent, but your own technology. Not the most powerful, but flavorful choices.

True. I forgot about that. Thanks!
i’m considering a Magic the Gathering background that fits a little better: the Izzet Engineer. I just hope the name and location associated with it won’t be an issue in a campaign.
Perhaps you can lean more into the intelligence required to be an effective sailor. Maybe he's an expert navigator. Instead of Athletics you could give him proficiency with Navigator's tools. I'm thinking about the character of John Blackthorn in the recent Shogun series on Hulu. He's not what I would call an athlete, but he understands the ins and outs of sailing.

I suppose I could do q custom background based around that. I’m just not sure how many tables would be cool with something like that. Still, I like your idea! Thank you. :)
