I just rolled by 1st Arti Battle Smith and unclear on how to use my 2 pets. Do I just have my Steel defender all the time, in and out of combat unless it dies? And same for My Homunculus, do I need to burn a spell slot to animate the Homunculus? or the SD? or are they just there once I Infuse (for the Homunc...) or in the SD's case it is just there all the time?
Steel Defender is out all the time until it dies. Reviving it can be done if it's been less than an hour since it died. It requires Smith's Tools, a spell slot (level 1 or higher) and 1 minute. Otherwise the Steel Defender can be recreated (for free) after a long rest so long as you have Smith's Tools with you.
When the Homunculus Servant Infusion is placed within the requisite gem crystal it's around all the time until it dies or the infusion ends (the infusion also ends when it dies). I think the only way to revive the Homunculus after it dies is to redo the Infusion after a Long Rest.

Greetings all,
I just rolled by 1st Arti Battle Smith and unclear on how to use my 2 pets. Do I just have my Steel defender all the time, in and out of combat unless it dies? And same for My Homunculus, do I need to burn a spell slot to animate the Homunculus? or the SD? or are they just there once I Infuse (for the Homunc...) or in the SD's case it is just there all the time?
