I have access to a large scale printer and was wondering if anyone has a good idea on where to find printable 1inch square basic battlemaps (around 24"x36")? I'm talking basic: ocean backdrop, grassland backdrop, stone floor backdrop, arctic, etc. Just plain terrain with a 1" grid that can be printed large scale.
I'm essentially looking for something that can serve as a backdrop to be placed underneath models that I build to give them more depth. . .and can also be thrown down and built upon to serve as a basic grid that matches the terrain we're currently in.
I'm certain these resources must exist but a google search and sifting through the first few pages of this forum didn't quite bring up what I'm looking for.
If you don't find something that sounds, you could put one together yourself.
There are a bunch of freely avaialble tileable/repeatable textures for grassland, water etc. available online (the Forgotten adventures site provides a lot of good stuff)
If you have an image editor, your could put these together in an image and put a grid on top and then print. Probably the trickiest bit is to make sure you get the scaling right for your print (e.g. pixel size of image and physical print size) so you don't get pixelation on your print.
I did just that. I was able to use Procreate to create some basic textures. I set the size of the canvas to 24x36 and used a drawing guide to overlay a 1 inch grid. The tricky part was getting the grid to stay because exporting the file didn't keep the grid on, just the image. I ended up taking a screen shot of the canvas, opening another Procreate layer, importing the photo, and expanding it to the original size (sort of cheating my way back to 1" scale). Exporting that took the grid with it, and I was able to print it out on our large format printer. The image I created was very high res from the get go, so I didn't have pixelation even though I expanded it from a screen shot. I put the backdrop in a 24x36 poster frame and bingo! Instant backdrop for models or landscapes for random encounters.
Thanks for the tip on the Forgotten Adventures site. I'll have to check that out.
