If I get a set of acrylic mii paints (say, Vallejo), can I mix the metallic and non-metallic paints successfully? For instance, mixing silver with black for gunmetal? Is this a bad idea for any reason?
I use Army Painter paints and just this morning, I mixed a light blue with a metallic silver and the result was exactly what I wanted. I'd say you can likely do the same with Vallejo.
You can totally mix black with metal to darken it down, you could also just the pure metal paint and then darken it to your liking with shades after that.

I have had more success with glazing the desired colors over the metallics. To me it looks better than trying to mix the two together.
The effect I will probably be going for is dark or black armor (like unpolished steel). I may try going black or dark gray and drybrushing silver.
Vallejo makes a metal medium that you can mix with any non-metallic color. I've found it works really well.
