I bought a displacer beast and tried to clean the mold lines, and yes, I did scrath the primer off in the process. After I had painted it, though, I didn't notice any difference between parts with primer and without. I do seal my minis with a thinned coat of varnish, so it helps in keeping the paint on.
In my opinion, If your minis are playing pieces first, I would keep mold lines on to preserve the primer and only remove really big ones. I have done so on multiple wiz kid minis, like the bear and a few kobolds and on the table, you don't pay attention to the mold lines. You can buy white primer paint in a pot (I think Games Workshop makes it) and use your brush to touch up the primer where you scratched it off during the cleaning process.

Is it strictly necessary to remove the mold lines? Wouldn’t this screw up the priming?
I did NOT eat those hikers.
