lately I am working on my own world and today I stumble over the topic "Climate". A for sure interesting topic and a topic which would help to flesh out the world and triggering a domino effect for other things. So I found this article (Working Out Climates Using the Climate Cookbook) very interesting and helpful. But I can't totally grasp it/ transfer it to my world, my map. In the past I decided how the terrain in the countrys should be, but not thinking about "the Great Ocean Conveyor Belt", equator, currents etc. Well not much.
Has anybody a better understanding about this topic and could help me?
This is useful for figuring out what the climate is like in certain areas and being able to place your key cities in places where the climate fits the flavour.
Lets help you understand this with a real world example.
In general, lets accept that without the circulation of currents, the closer to the equator you are, the hotter the area and the closer to the poles you are, the cooler the area. Halfway in between is the temperate zones. For large land locked areas like Central Russia, this is generally the case.
On Earth, there is a current called the Gulf stream that comes up the side of Florida, up the American coast and then quickly across to Europe. This carries warm temperatures further north than usual. So Britain, at the top of where the gulf stream is, is a relatively temperate zone. The England/Scotland border is roughly the same latitude as Moscow, to give you an idea of effect this warm water has.
on the side you will find even more helpfull and thoughtful posts! I have my collection of helpful web-links :-D Well I came at peace with the climate struggle and decided to calm down a bit and focused on the pols and the equator. This should to the job... I think.
Greetings :-)
