I would say start with the basic - draw all the party members of an adventuring group, and make sure they're all different so you have different facial/body types you need to deal with. For example draw Burly's Rangers:
Burly Stonegrout - dwarf fighter uses a war pick and shield and was a miner so wears a lantern or candle helmet, and has a long braided beard.
Uric Frostwind - large human barbarian who wears firs and uses a two handed maul, and sports a large horseshoe style mustache.
Gimbly Gutcut - a goblin rogue scout that wears a hooded cloak and uses a crossbow.
River Lightfoot - female elf ranger who wears studded leather armor and uses two scimitars as her weapons, and adorns herself with feathers in her hair and on the hilts of her weapon.
Once you have that down try a few action poses.
Check out some good character artist like Richard Whitters. He shows a lot of his work in progress as he sketches out different character ideas.

Only monsters? Or any creature from D&D? This request might seem a bit unorthodox but can you draw a Goliath Sorcerer? Sorry to waste your time.
When players get creative.
