Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum so if this post doesn't belong here please let me know & I'll do my best to redirect my question elsewhere.
I'm a baby DM and I'm working on a few maps for my group to explore, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of map-making tools or programs I could utilize, preferably free ones. Right now I'm just sketching my ideas out onto grid paper the old-fashioned way, but I would really love something shareable online since our group is going to be entirely virtual. If I could find one that supports 3D maps, that would be even better!
The map I'm currently working on is a castle, if that's helpful at all.
If you are just looking for a random dungeon, maybe Donjon, or DunGen is a good tool for you.
For creating battlemaps, there are tons of options out there, I use DungeonDraft, which is not yet finished (beta), but it is the one I liked the most. It has a unique style that I like, but it seems that it is also what turns some people away form it.
If you want battle maps I recommend Dungeonfog. You have to finish a map before starting a new one and there's a bit of a learning curve, but once you learn how to use it, it allows for a lot of creativity and it can be used for multiple genres which makes it useful for more than just DnD maps. Maps on Dungeonfog aren't quite professional level but they're also much quicker to make than professional-looking maps.

I have not yet tried my hands on world-building cartography, but here are a few I found online:
And one 3D option:
More Interesting Lock Picking Rules
