So, I'm hoping to play a Wild Soul Barbarian in my next campaign. I'm in love with the flavour of the sub-class, how it sort of fuses the magic of the Feywild, emotions and the Wild Magic Sorcerer and puts it in the Barbarian chassis.
Does anyone have any advice for playing this sub-class? Is it as overpowered as many online suggest? If so, do you have any solutions to tame the Wild Soul whilst maintaining the spirit of the sub-class?
I'm a fan of it because of that probability, I really enjoy the unpredictability of Wild Surges, adds to the fun and the excitement of rolling dice. It's also something to consider with regards to positioning in combat, when do I trigger my rage or use a spell. It's definitely not for everyone and they're both sub-classes it would run by other players before I turned up to the first session with one.
I don't see how this could be overpowered as much of it's abilities are linked to a random d8. Sure detect magic for CON mod # per long rest is handy and trading taking damage to give a spell slot to an ally is cool for short rest but again, random and might not give you what you need.
It might be the only subclass so far that get a combat effective feature at 10th level, but this is only passive and reactive to opponents forcing you to make a saving throw.
As far as I can see there is no feature that reliably boosts your Barbarian traits: boost to damage, crowd control, survivability are all on the Wild Surge table, but you don't get a way to influence that roll, so you are praying to RNGezus to get what you need. So I would think that you would need to rely on features to support the roll your character needs to fill in the party.
Out of the gate it's caster supporter from level 6 with random boosts.
It looks fun for those players who like random stuff to happen. To me Result 3 on the table is the worst: d4 spirits you place within 30 ft but shoot of 30 ft in a random direction to deal 2d8 Force damage to 5 ft radius. This will most likely don't do much but it could as likely snipe your own caster or the opponents caster. You do have a little control by placing them tactically but still.
So no, this subclass doesn't come off as over powered to me. I wonder which arguments are used to justify such claims.
There are no reliable boosts or crowd control, so you basically fall back to the basic of the Barbarian class and you have some surprise effects each time you enter a rage. Which will limit the position where you would like to rage, because you don't want to harm allies. Which does limit the Feral Instincts feature on level 7 a little bit, because you really want to Rage to avoid being surprised.
So I ask you: what role or character do you want to play as a Wild Soul barbarian?
I am not a fan of it (or the Wild Sorcerer), simply because the probability of damaging your own party is too high.
This. If I was at an adventure league game and one of these came up, I'd pack my things and leave. I'm done being wrecked by other people's RNG.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

That's totally fair!
