I'm starting this campaign soon with a Mountain Dwarf Barbarian. I've never played a Barbarian before and am looking for some advice as to which subclass might be best suited. For context, here's my character's backstory:
Durn is a shield dwarf from the kingdom of Alatorin. From a young age, he was trained in personal combat, leaning on the strong martial traditions of his people against the orcs, goblins, trolls, and giants that threaten the race. He grew up listening to stories of Marthammor Duin, the dwarven god of wanderers and patron of dwarves who had left the clanholds to explore the world. He was also known as Finder-of-Trails, Watcher over Wanderers and the Watchful Eye. Durn always envied how Marthammor approached life with a gnome-like demeanor, curious to see what lay beyond the horizon and always willing to trade stories of travels. And so, Durn developed his rare spirit of dwarven exploration and became what is known as a Volamtar ("blazers of fresh trails"). Durn left home at the age of 52 and has been wandering and adventuring ever since.
He makes his own way, but he's kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations. He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do. He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with that of society.
Thanks! I think I've narrowed it down to path of the totem or ancestral guardian. Ancestral guardian seems to fit the backstory a bit better, but I'll see what the rest of my party looks like before making a decision
Path of the Zealot also seems to fit your backstory. The whole "chosen by the gods" vibe might work. After playing through dragon of Ice Spire peak myself, you definitely want to have some HP or be a tank, so try to pick a barbarian subclass that's hard to kill. I'd recommend Zealot, Totem, or Ancestral. Those are the tankiest.

So, my preference in paths is path of the totem, bear aspect for lvl 3. Resistance to all but psychic is nice while raging.
There's also the dwarf only battle rager, but the damage there is ehhhh.
