I am attempting to make a bard writer (novelist) he is a creation bard known for his almost life like books and stories. I was wondering what spells you guys think would fit. Its gonna be level 8 so 4th level and lower. Ideas?
You'll need Vicious Mockery cantrip. No way around it. Hypnotic Pattern, circle 3 spell, is too good to pass up, imho. Especially if your DM gives you a custom Instrument of the Bards for your writing. I think Polymorph is perfect for your theme as well.
Bards are a healer class. Generally speaking, they fill the same roll as clerics and druids. So, barring having someone else function as the group healer, I would make sure to have Healing Word, Lesser Restoration. Sadly, bards do not get Revify, so you'll need to get Raise Dead with your fifth level spells, as well as Greater Restoration and Animate Objects. This is going to be a bit of a burden once you hit level 9, getting all of them, so I'd keep some throw-away spell from lower level you can switch a spell out for one of those when you level up.
Illusory script is very niche, but fits a writer too well to not take.
For flavor only and not necessarily usefulness. Comprehend Languages and Tongues to get info/stories that you can transcribe, Magic Mouth on a page of a book might be fun as well as Glyph of Warding, and Illusory Script.. These all have writing. As far as storytelling, again Tongues and Comprehend Language are great, also spells that convey emotions to manipulate the crowd while you speak such as Enthrall and Calm Emotions. Also the speak with type spells.
I agree Vicious Mockery is a must and Hypnotic Pattern is great. The advice from Mephista on the healing and restoration spells is spot on. Maybe any spells you might take with magical secrets at 10 could be almost like on a permanent scroll/book form that you have found/translated but still are restricted to your magic spell casting rules. Or more powerful Bard spells that you want and don't necessarily fit your idea could be snippets of stories/ fables you have read or heard and written in your "spell/poetry" book . You have discovered that there are certain rhythms or cadence or some such that tap into the primevel power (instead of song notes) and allow you to manifest them in their magic forms, ie spells. Summon spells you could get from Magical Secrets could go along with the creation aspect.
I wonder if you could create a healing herb and use that. I know the herb will disappear but would the benefits? Could be a house rule. I am not very familiar with the creation bard.
You could choose your spells depending on what genre your character wants to write. Fear and Phantasmal Killer would work well for a horror writer. Clairvoyance and Locate Creature would be great if you want to write a whodunit. You can also talk to your gm about using a typewriter or pen and parchment as your arcane focus so you can "write" your spells into existence. I think that would be very thematic for a creation bard.
Not sure if it's any help at this point since a lot of time has passed, but I've actually been playing as a bard author and might be able to offer a couple of suggestions. My character is a bit different from what you're describing- she's interested in studying local legends and trying to get to the truth behind them, but she does have a few spells that would be useful. I've found at least two that would be great for a writer
Comprehend Languages: Useful for if you need to do interviews or ask questions about something in a place you don't understand, or if you need to decipher any old texts or the writing on ancient ruins.
Illusory Script: Allows you to write messages that can only be read by people you choose

Someone who collects stories to write would work as an adventurer.
I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
