I'm writing a story about one of my NPCs, a bard named Bene Timber. Bene Timber is a member of the Diplomatic Corps of Calanthi, and at this stage he is still learning the ropes.
He is travelling back to visit with Druids in The Great Wood north of Stonebridge. The head druid, Alnifolia, is with him, along with a lower level druid, Gillfort, and a small party of adventurers Bene hired as a sort of body guard. They are Vallen, a human Paladin; Jackwon, a human Barbarian; and Dravist a Cleric. The Magistrate (ruler of the area around Stonebridge) has given Bene a small band of soldiers (8 footmen and 8 messenger riders). They have a cart for the party's supplies and a wagon to bring back loads of "treasure" from the Druid's home in The Great Wood.
So, the group has been attacked by a large band of Orcs. Bene was alerted before the attack began and shot an Orc with his crossbow as things began. What is bene going to do as a level 3 Lore Bard to make a real impact on the fight?

I like this story hook. As a bard from the College of Lore, you could come up with a spontaneous "Cutting Words" performance in which you put on a kind of musical performance in which you insult the orcs in the worst possible way. They would be distracted, it would be something only the bard could do, and it would still be somewhat within the rules.
