In our next campaign, I will play a spy. For this, Im planning on starting with assassin and then switch to whisper bard.
In my opinion, shadow blade would be perfect for this build. This would allow me to infiltrate a place as a merchant or something similar and then pull out a weapon out of nowhere.
Do you think, it would be overpowered for me to put this spell on the bard spelllist?
My DM is ok with it, but I dont want to overshadow my other players.
Do you have other spell recommendations for a spy themed bard?
The other players will be a berserker and an abjuration wizard.
It will be a mostly social campaign (we work for a king to manipulate the neighbouring country, so our kingdom has better chances of winning in the upcoming war. Everyone of us has personal grievances with the other king, and he will probably turn out to be the bbeg. My character will basically be the counterweight to the barbarian, only wanting to kill our targets, and being very carefull and diplomatic otherwise. But because of this I want to make sure these targets really stay dead.)
It shouldn't be too big of a deal. You might convince your DM (or other players) to have it replace one of your level 10 magical secrets (at level 10 you would still get 2 spells, but only 1 non-bard spell).
If you're talking about taking it as a magical secret, no it isn't too powerful. If you mean just adding it to the bard list, that might be a bit much.
Also, do you know if you're going to be able to gain surprise in social situations? By the book you can't but DMs may rule otherwise if they want to encourage social interaction. If not, you may want to consider a different archetype since assassin only gives significant benefit if you can get surprise.
