Hello, I created a custom Human race, which belongs to the Human race-group (in my case, named Human of Greyhawk), and which also has several variant/subraces. Under each variant/subrace, I've added a racial trait where they can choose a feat, with the intention being that they either choose X feat OR the Prodigy feat.
Only problem is, when I go through the character creation process for any of these variant/subraces of my custom Human race (again which belongs to the Human race-group), the Prodigy feat does not show up in the "Choose Feat" dropdown. Presumably, this is because Prodigy is only available to Human, Half-elf, or Half-orc. But my variant/subrace belongs to the Human race-group. Shouldn't that satisfy the Prodigy race prerequisite?
Shouldn't this be considered a bug? In the meantime, is there any way I can get around this unfortunate barrier?
I did find a work-around. After browsing other related threads, I discovered that there is an option at the start of the "Character Builder" process that allows me to tell the builder whether or not to "Use Prerequisites" for "Feats." I turned that off, and suddenly the Prodigy feat is available in the Choose Feat dropdown :)
I still think this is a bug, given that both my custom Human race belongs to the "Human" race-group, and my variant/subrace also belongs to the "Human" race-group. This should satisfy the Prodigy prerequisites.
Choosing a race group in the homebrew race builder will not cause that race to be considered a member of the race group, only to be sorted according to that group in the Character Builder. The help text says selecting a race group "Decides if/where your race will be grouped in when selected it in the character builder."
If you truly want to count all of these as human, you would have to create them specifically as variants of the base Human. Any subraces would have to be present either as individual variants, or else you must create a racial trait that grants "subrace" options.
Otherwise, you may do are you've already done for the workaround (disabling feat prerequisites), or else create a homebrew copy of the Prodigy feat that has this homebrew race included in the list of required races.
Thanks for the quick feedback! (I'm only now getting around to using D&D Beyond, even though I created an account a few years ago.)
Earlier, I had read the help text about what a "race group" signified, but I simply misunderstood it. I thought it was saying more than that. But I can see now from your comments that the race group is only used for sorting.
I had a feeling I'd have to do what you suggested, namely, create my human variant(s) under the base Human race, in order for it to be considered by the Prodigy feat. I might give that a go. (I wish I could just move the variants I created to be under the base Human race instead of under my custom Human race, but I think I'll need to build all these variants from scratch again.)
I was also thinking about the other suggestion you gave, which is to create a homebrew copy of the Prodigy feat, which would then incorporate my custom races. Of course that option is less than ideal, since I'd end up having to make homebrew copies of many other things, whenever the Human race is a prerequisite for something ;)
Again, thanks so much for commenting on my first forum post asking for help!
You will have to recreate the races entirely, yes, but just think of it as good homebrew practice! The more homebrew I create, the better I get at it, always.
Right on! I did it. I recreated all the variant Human subraces, and it went a lot quicker than I thought it would. I even found a few errors in what I had done previously ;)
The best thing was, the character builder performed flawlessly when I switched my character over from the earlier version of the subrace to the newer one. I was dreading lots of glitches and bugs, but it changed everything over smoothly. Best of all, it allowed me to choose Prodigy from the "Choose Feat" dropdown :)
I feel truly Human! ;)

Not a problem!
