Based on what I've seen from forum software, it's working as intended. A generic reply means you're replying to the OP. If you want to imitate a threaded reply (as if this were Usenet or a mailing list of some sort), you could add in the username or quote f the person you want to specifically address.

Using the Reply feature only created a new posting at the bottom of the thread with now quotes or indication who or what I was replying to
"I was led to believe there would be punch and pie?"
