For over a year I’ve had some major annoyances with the sourcebooks and adventure books throughout my first time taking my try at dungeon mastering. Most the the annoyances have to do with one of two things:
Generic linking within sourcebooks to other books. For example they link to the Table of Contents (hereafter referred to as ToC) instead of the page or chapter of content the paragraph refers.
Incorrect linking within sourcebooks to other books (sometimes within the same book to a different location). This happens to have a similar issue to the first, but the difference is that the links are referring to something specific and go to something generic. (The first issue is they are generic links to the DMG that take you to the DMG but the context of the paragraph refers to a specific chapter of content instead, but just links to the book’s ToC or the last place you were reading in the book)
For context, these problems happen most frequently when I am offline using an iPad with the companion app (both new and old) or using Google Chrome while on the iPad. There are more cases where if you check these locations on a PC using any browser, the links will also be broken in the same way. I made sure to update all my apps this morning before writing anything here and by no means is this list exhaustive. I ran Descent into Avernus for the majority of my time dungeon mastering recently and now I DM a group going through the Icewind Dale Adventurebook. Also I constantly check through rules checks, like any DM does both in and out of game, the DMG, PHB, Tasha’s, Xanathar’s, or any book with a monster I’m running. So I’ll try to keep updating this post as I am able and start with a slew of issues I have a record of recently while just checking links through reading and preparing for my next session in Tasha’s.
(As an aside, I understand DDB has made a lot of strides to expedite finishing sourcebook preparation for getting things out in time for books to release on the website. So anytime I see the ‘generic linking’ to a book’s last page or ToC, to me this seams like an automated scan for reference content rather than reading the content and properly linking to the correct locations. I really hope this default gets looked at. I would definitely prefer something be done right than to continue dealing with the content not linking to the contextual link of the paragraphs.)
Tasha’s Book: Environmental Hazards - Infested #56-60: The quicksand link here sends you to the DMG ToC, or the last page you visit on player app rather than the chapter & section of the notation for quicksand.
Tasha’s Book: Magical Phenomena - Thrym’s Howl - Extreme Cold: Same issue. Sends to DMG ToC or last page visited on player app instead of the extreme cold location.
Tasha’s Book: Natural Hazards: DMG link should go to the Natural Hazards page in DMG, not to the ToC.
Tasha’s Book: Puzzles - Reckless Steps: PHB link sends to ToC, not the Jump Rules section which the paragraph refers.
Tasha’s Book: Puzzles - Reckless Steps: Paragraph refers to languages in the PHB and different characters for the puzzle in “raising the difficulty” section. The link jumps again to the ToC and not to languages section in Ch.4 of PHB.
Rime of the Frost Maiden: About this Book - “The Calendar of Harptos” links to the DMG ToC/last page visited. This should link to “Tracking Time” subsection of “Creating a Campaign” in Ch.1 of DMG
Rime of the Frost Maiden: Adventure summary - Auril’s Everlasting Rime: Appendix C links to the main appendix. It refers directly to the “Everlasting Rime from Auril, and should either have a separate link to the Auril stat block to help DM’s reference the appendix here, or re-link the general appendix link to Auril’s stat block.
Rime of the Frost Maiden: Running the Adventure - Spells and equipment paragraph refers to specific pages and shoots to ToC or the last page you visited on the player app inside their respective books. This should refer to PHB Ch. 5 and DMG Ch.7.
Rime of the Frost Maiden: Adventure Flowchart - Wilderness Survival - Extreme Cold: DMG link goes to ToC/last page visited in player app. Should link to DMG Ch.5 under the Wilderness section for this generic link or add a link to this specific location for convenience.
Same as #9 but fishing section should link to Ch.5 of PHB.
Same as #9 but this is another issue that is really bad: under “Overland Travel” section. The “Getting Around Ten-Towns” link just takes you to a chapter head for Ch.1. This is not even the right page. It seems that the chapter 1 link in the second paragraph just was copied on this link too. It should link to the “Ten-Towns Overview” Page and snap down to the “Getting Around Ten-Towns” header.
Rime of the Frost Maiden: Character Creation - same as #9, PHB should link to Ch.4, not ToC or last page visited on App.
Rime of the Frost Maiden: Character Creation - Goliath Player Characters: Same as #9. Should have a PHB link to Ch.2 Races, not ToC or general last page visited on App.
Rime of the Frost Maiden: Character Creation - Starting Equipment: “Winter Survival Gear” is another broken link in these books that is supposed to link to a header on a page and just links to Chapter 1 instead. It should link to “Ten Towns Overview” in the app, and ”Winter Survival Gear” header within Ch.1.
There is also a typo under the Magic in Ten-Towns page on the player app. It reads “See appendix A of the Monster Manual for the axe beak’s stat block.” I believe the “of” here should read “or” since the appendix A referral to the IWD book.
IWD: The Bremen in a Nutshell section - “Sacrifices to Auril” links to Ch.1 which is not the right page. The correct page is “Ten-Towns Overview” with snap to the “Sacrifices of Auril” header.
IWD: Locations in Bremen - “Ten-Towns Rumors” improper link to Ch.1 Heading page. Rumors are on the next page under main header “Ten-Towns Quest” with the “Ten-Towns Rumors” sub-header.
IWD: Lake Monster - Unsafe Waters: ”Rowboat” links are broken and don’t link anywhere. All three read “incorrect link” when tapped.
IWD: Lake Monster - Unsafe Waters: Frigid Water links to the “Welcome to the Far North” Page, (which happens to a lot of links, so I’ll refer to it as WttFN) it should link to the “Adventure Flowchart” page, main section “Wilderness Survival” with the sub header “Frigid Water.”
IWD: Lake Monster - Scouting the Lake: “Fishing for Knucklehead Trout” link again goes to WttFN. It should link to the “Adventure Flowchart” page, main section “Wilderness Survival” with the sub header “Fishing for Knucklehead Trout.”
IWD: Bryn Shander in a Nutshell - “Sacrifices to Auril” links again to Ch.1. Exact same issues as Bremen in a Nutshell link. Safe to assume all of these links for each town coded the same. Every town should be fixed for this link.
IWD: Locations in Bryn Shander - The Northlook: “Ten-Towns Rumors” improper link to Ch.1 Heading page, but the back button appears in the bottom left. Rumors are on the next page under main header “Ten-Towns Quest” with sub-header Ten-Towns Rumors. This issues is again the exact same issue as from Bremen’s Locations page. I’ll no longer include this here as it will likely be a recurring issue in all the Locations pages for all towns. Please fix this.
IWD: Locations in Bryn Shander - Appendix B link works correctly, however this is an issue when referring to secrets in this adventure is that they’re listed in the Character Building section of the book before Ch.1 and in the appendix for sometimes more information. Would be good to have a backwards link possibly here for more info on the secret there too.
IWD: Foaming Mugs - Search for the Sled: “Blizzards” link. WttFN routing again. Correct location is “Adventure Flowchart” page, “Wilderness Survival” header, “Blizzards” sub header.
In general after typing with a split screen for my iPad to essentially be a QA or Editor intern on the DDB app, I’ve noticed that with the build in keyboard function at the bottom of the screen covers the new back button to go to the previous page without kicking back out to the Library menus. I would think this button for functionality, it would be best to put this back button at the top left near the library back button so you can see both back buttons at the same time and not tap the wrong one on accident. (I have to tap the web browser outside of the text box to clear the keyboard “predictive text” on the iPad, then go to the DDB app to hit the back button each time because it is hidden under the predictive words menu.)
IWD: Caer-Dineval in a Nutshell - “Sacrifices of Auril” goes to Ch.1, see above.
IWD: Black Swords: Main Header: “Buried Treasures” link incorrectly links to the Bremen Summary page and does not snap to the correct header. This should link to “Locations in Bremen” page, “Buried Treasures” header.
IWD: Black Swords: Knights of the Black Sword - “Appendix B” link to the secrets again from before would like QoL link to the character creation section including info on secrets too.
IWD: Black Swords: the links to “The Unseen” quest and “chapter 2” here are specifically referencing Durth and Nildar. I believe this is correct links, however for clarity would be best to snap to Nildar and Durth’s mentions in these sections instead or link the names of the NPCs as separate links.
IWD: Black Swords - C6 Gatehouse: “Buried Treasures” link has the same problem as #27.
IWD: Black Swords - C20. Shrine to Levistus: “Brown Mold” does not link to the correct page. Instead it shoots you to the ToC for the DMG. The correct linked page during game sessions when I ran Brown Mold or Yellow Mold in the Dungeon of the Dead Three in Avernus adventure I remember having the same problem. None of the links worked even on my PC and I had to google what this was instead of having a link to just tap. I just spent 5 to 10 min trying to track down the page where to find Brown Mold while writing this and I just gave up trying to find where it is. After using the in-app search feature I found the correct page: Ch.5 - Mapping a Dungeon Page, Dungeon Hazards Header, Brown Mold sub-header.
IWD: Caer-Koenig in a Nutshell - “Sacrifices to Auril” sends to Ch.1. Check above.
IWD: The Unseen - Following the Tracks: “Wilderness Encounters” sends to Ch.2. Should link to Wilderness Encounters page within Ch.2.
IWD: Back Buttons I’m coming to find out are linked to pages, not to the Header or Sub-header that you tapped. This is a major QoL feature that should be pushed. Being able to hit the back button to the spot you were in the book would be much better.
IWD: The Unseen - O6. Commander’s Quarters: “Chardalyn” is a super annoying thing when I ran this location. Links AGAIN to WttFN page. This should be linked to the next page Adventure Summary, Netherese Necropolis Header, Chardalyn information box.
IWD: Dougan’s Hole in a Nutshell - Sacrifices to Auril links to Ch.1. See above.
IWD: Holed Up - Crossing the Tundra: “Blizzards” link to the WttFN problem. This is such a recurring problem. I’ll stop posting solution locations, refer to when Blizzards was mentioned above.
IWD: Holed Up - Sneaking Out: “Wilderness Encounters” links to Ch.2 again. Should be “Wilderness Encounters” Page within Ch.2.
IWD: Easthaven in a Nutshell - “Sacrifices to Auril” to Ch.1 again. See above.
IWD: Locations in Easthaven - Easthaven Ferry: Aft Cabin links “Outpost Locations” to Caer-Konig for some reason. This is just trying to reference the fortress and the Kelvin’s Cairn location in “The Unseen” quest. So I’m still not sure what this link is meant to send me to read.
IWD: Locations in Easthaven - The Wet Trout: “Sacrifices to Auril” link to Ch.1 again. And “Ten-Towns Rumors” sends you to the same Ch.1 page too.
IWD: Locations in Easthaven - The White Lady Inn: Seance links to Dinev’s Rest just sends you to the main Caer-Dineval location. The Correct page is Locations in Caer-Dineval, Dinev’s Rest Header.
IWD: Toil and Trouble - Appendix C reference again works to be generic, but there is no link on “Arcane Brotherhood” section underneath Dzaan’s stat block for quick reference for DM’s hopping between pages. This should be a major QoL change.
IWD: Toil and Trouble - Cauldron of Plenty for some reason on the item page and in appendix D does not have artwork put together to this item from the quest. This item does have some artwork however in the artwork featuring the villain of the quest: Maud Chiselbone at the bottom of the page. Something would be great to maybe grab a zoomed image of this for some reference maybe?
IWD: Toil and Trouble - The Cauldron Caves - “Slippery Ice” links to the ToC/last page visited in the DMG and does not link to the proper page. This should be linked to Ch.5, Wilderness Survival page, Wilderness Hazards Header, Slippery Ice sub-header.
IWD: Town Hall Capers - The Cauldron Caper: Zhentarim Thieves - The “Luskan Arms” links only to Targos general page. The correct link is Locations in Targos page, The Luskan Arms header.
IWD: Town Hall Capers - Easthaven Town Hall - T17. Jailers’ Room: “Sacrifices to Auril” linked to Ch.1 again. (However this page seems that most of the links worked very well to the specific space they were supposed to go, and all the back buttons snapped me back to the correct sub headers where I left off.)
IWD: Good Mead in a Nutshell - “Sacrifices to Auril” to Ch.1 again.

I will revisit this for more notes of issues I have in the books as well as if any issues are fixed I’ll try to add an Edit for the issues that are resolved. Hopefully DDB team sees this and can remedy these issues. I would love to get these books to useable status for my games when I exclusively use the website and the DDB app to hold all the books for D&D that I own. Since I’m abroad and traveling often for prepping, all my DDB resources is my only copy of these books so I want to be able to have a reliable digital resource that utilizes the linking functions. It makes the digital resource superior to the physical copies for hopping from page to page while DMing and checking things rapidly. Thank you for reading!
I don't own Icewind Dale so I can't comment on much, but regarding this one:
15. There is also a typo under the Magic in Ten-Towns page on the player app. It reads “See appendix A of the Monster Manual for the axe beak’s stat block.” I believe the “of” here should read “or” since the appendix A referral to the IWD book.
Appendix A of the Monster Manual is where you find the Axe Beak stat block, not IWD Appendix A, so what you've quoted there from the book is correct.

Correct, using only the mobile app inside the books. The linking is so bad I feel like while running the game I can’t use my tablet at all because it constantly makes me manually have to go to the ToC over and over.
Appendix A in the IWD book is Trinkets and not creatures. Also, there are no stats for the Axe Beak in the IWD book. The stats are in Appendix A of the Monsters Manual. It isn't a typo.

To confirm, you are having these issues on the Mobile App? I have tried a few of these in the Web App and they work just fine.

That isn’t the point, you’ve missed the point entirely. It is an issue of the typo, not of the linking for this point.
Appendix A in the IWD book is Trinkets and not creatures. Also, there are no stats for the Axe Beak in the IWD book. The stats are in Appendix A of the Monsters Manual. It isn't a typo.
Oh I see what this is referring to now. 🤦🏻♂️ Yes okay that's correct.
