I’m trying to create a magic item that is a shield that will give a character a ranged attack (yes, a captain America shield, or a captain eberron shield, if you will). I am able to create the shield but can’t get a ranged attack option to appear on a character sheet when equipped and attuned. I’ve added the modifier for `Ranged Weapon Attack - Bludgeoning` To the shield, but apparently that doesn’t add a ranged attack to the shield. I can change the item to be a weapon instead of armor, and add the AC bonus to it but it feels like a bit of a hack. I would rather be able to add the extra ranged attack and keep the type as a shield. Does anyone have an idea of how to accomplish this?
You are not the first or even the second or third to make a thread trying to make this very item.
Unfortunately, magic items cant add actions. So no shield can add an attack to the character sheet. You can of course put the attack information in the description the same as any magic item description then just make a custom action on the character sheet.
Thanks that helps a lot. I would like to avoid having my characters adding custom actions. I’m leaning towards just marking the item as a ranged weapon and then having it give a +2 bonus to AC when equipped. Then it functionally does the same thing but then you can see the attack in the attack and action section of the character sheet. @DxJxC Do you see any downside to that besides making sure that they characters don’t have a normal shield and this ranged weapon equipped at the same time?

You would have to make sure it is only used by characters with shield proficiency and that the character has proficiency with the weapon (for that you can make granting weapon proficiency a modifier).

Use the boomerang base weapon and add the +2 ac mod in customization. Close as I could get
