When building a character from a homebrew race with replaced base racial traits, the character builder confirm race pop-up still shows those original base traits. I searched the forums but did not see this reported.
Example:
I created an 'Abyssal Tiefling' based off the UA: That Old Black Magic. In this case, the +2 Cha was replaced by a +1 Con bonus. Also, I selected that the existing 'Hellish Resistance' be replaced by the 'Abyssal Fortitude' trait. However, the pop-up shows both original base traits under 'Racial Traits' with the new traits down below.
When actually selecting the character's abilities, everything looks okay. Bonuses, etc are as they should be. It's appears that it's only on this pop-up that the display is incorrect.
I realize that this post is old already, but I stumbled across it while trying to sort out the same problem. I'll make this post for anyone else who may be wondering this. I now realize what the problem is.
That information is entered in the "basic information" section under "short description". As far as I can tell, you cannot edit the basic information for variant races (for some stupid reason). I'm sure the given explanation would be that variants are expected to have the same speed, size, and so on as their base race. Not sure why I can't decide that for myself.
Anyhow if you want to change anything in the basic description (including size speed, and that short description that you see in that confirm race pop-up in the character builder) then you need to create a whole new race. Hopefully this changes soon. For me personally, this makes the "Create Variant" option to be completely useless. When the players in my campaign are building characters I need them to be able to see the correct info in the short description.
Also, it would seem that you can't use the base race as a template for a variant, which makes no sense to me. What if I just want to change one thing on the bugbear race? I can't use a template if I use the "create variant" option, because bugbears don't have any variants.
