This is a known current issue that the team are aware of, when leaving a customized field blank. You can avoid this in the meantime by using the Remove Customizations button; this will require that any other customizations be re-entered after the fact, but will prevent the API error from occurring.
The character sheet will throw an error (See code below) if you try to manually remove text from the Notes section of an item under customize.
