I suppose the main question is, what do you mean by "tagging" and "link to the spell"? And what sort of homebrew are you trying to make - a subclass? A magic item?
(And of course, when you say you own the sourcebooks, do you own them on DnDBeyond or as physical copies.)

Spell tags spell][/spell (with the extra brackets, cant add em here or it tries to be a link) not working well for me either. they are working on the homebrew items details page but not once i give the item to a character.
for example Power Word Pain and sickness radiance wont tag so the link to the spell wont work
Power Word Pain and Sickening Radiance are from Xanathar's Guide to Everything. You would need to own that sourcebook, or purchase the spells individually, in order to use them in your own homebrew.
Alternately, if someone else is sharing those spells with you via a campaign, they could create the homebrew for you to use.

Ah, right. Tooltips and other links don't work on the DDB character sheets. It would be very nice if they did, but as of now, they don't.
