Hello, let me start by saying I am an ultra noob. I have very very little D&D xp but I am trying to learn and get into the game with some friends.
I have read through the basic rules before, and have played a few sessions in the past, so I know enough about D&D to get me buy
The other day I decided to buy the Tomb of Annihilation module cause I figured If I worked though that It would help me learn the game and I plan to eventually DM.
firstly, I did not realize until after purchase that I apparently require 2 or 3 more books I was unaware of (PHB, monster book, and one other one) I thought that was a little sucky that I didn't know this until I bought the module, but that's ok I may have simply missed a notice where it informed me of this.
Well in the beginning of Tomb of Annihilation, it says you need the PHB in order to run this module, So I bought it, but I am now realizing that all the info I need is actually in the basic rules. or is?
Long story short. I just feel kinda ripped off by the whole experience. I am still going to keep the book and play the game etc. but I have yet to use anything in the PHB that wasn't already in the basic rules and I am not even sure If I needed to buy it at all.
Looking at other forums on here, I guess there are some differences between the 2 documents, but I don't really understand enough to know if I actually needed those extra (subclass among other things?) to run this module.
Well, in every published adventure so far in 5th edition, they said you need PHB, MM and DMG. The core books.
Although I tend to agree, no one of them is 'strictly' necessary. The Basic Rules covers the most important things to run the game and the stats of the most common monsters.
I advise you to consult the PHB, though. It was all the archetypes, the background and the feats and the spells. Also, the PHB is updated with the Errata. The Basic Rules isn't.
Ahh yes, I see now that the feats are missing from the basic rules and I am think that's a pretty important thing.
I haven't naught the DMG yet, because nothing in the module has referenced it yet. Will it eventually be referenced or is there information I don't even realize I need in the DMG.
Finally, I am the only one in the group that has spent money on this. Do the other players need to buy the PHB? or cna they just borrow my account whenever they need something that's only found in the PHB
For the PHB: It's very similar to the basic rules aside from the extra feats, subclasses, spells, and so on. However these can be purchased individually as well (and it reduces the price of the full PHB here if you do so). Apart from those, referencing the basic rules is more than sufficient for most cases.
For the DMG: It doesn't contain anything that will be referenced apart from possibly magic items (which can similarly be purchased individually) and tables you can roll on to randomly pick them. It does contain many rules and advice for running the game, like usage of ability scores, using maps, social interaction, improvisation. It also has a huge section on building your own game world at the start, but that's not particularly relevant to running a published adventure. I recommend it strongly, but the dungeon master section at the end of the basic rules is a good start.
The Monster Manual monsters can of course, be purchased individually as needed as well, but the ones that are most relevant to ToA come with that purchase anyway I believe.
For other players, if you have them add their characters to a campaign, and someone with a Master Tier subscription (whether you or someone else in the campaign) enables content sharing, they will be able to view any content you have purchased and use it for character sheets in that campaign. Otherwise they will need to buy the PHB or the individual components they want to use that aren't in the basic rules. Note that account sharing is against the ToS.
