I'm looking to make a Circle of the Primeval druid subclass homebrew for private use. I cannot figure out how to add a custom companion creature.
I've created the class feature, and then attempted to add it under the 'Creature' option. Obviously the Primeval Companion does not exist in the game currently so I've then gone and made that as a homebrew creature. However when I then attempt to search for it, it does not appear.
I've tried the same thing but adding it as a feat also.
I can see that one user has done it already, so it must be possible! (think it was @Damaros?)
I've never quite understood what the Creatures section in sub-class features is for, as adding something there doesn't seem to cause it to appear on the sheet or anything. To add a companion creature to their Extras section the user has to add it manually.
For sub-class companion creatures DDB have been adding them built into the sub-class; you'll want to take a look at the Drakewarden to see how that's done, I think the Battle Smith might also have been updated to have its Steel Defender function this way.
If you haven't got it unlocked then what you want to do is copy a monster stat-block into a feature description, then edit it to match the primeval companion stats, features etc. As long as you copied all the styling properly (it can be tricky in some browsers) it should display like an stat-block normally does. The stat-block itself won't update in any way, it's just there for reference.
For the Drakewarden they also add several actions; one is used to track hit-points, so you give it a reset type (probably "other") then add limited use data to the action so you can have the number of "uses" scale with the number of hit-points it should have at each level. This is probably going to be a pain in the ass to setup as I think you'll need to set the correct value for every single Druid level; if you know what level(s) you're going to playtest at then you could limit yourself to only the ones you need. You can also add another action for the companion's attack, though I'm not sure if it's currently possible to get the correct value for this, as it will be calculating based upon one of the player's stats rather than the companion.
Also, this thread probably belongs Homebrew & House Rules.
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.

But I'm talking about adding a companion as a subclass feature gained at a certain level. Or is that just not soemthing that is available to do yet?
(Is it possible to tag users in posts? Would love to ask Damaros what they did.)
