When attempting to build a ranger with the deft explorer optional feature, I am unable to select a proficiency gained from a custom background for the perk that gives a skill of your choice expertise (double bonus). If you select a predefined background, for example entertainer, you CAN select a proficiency gained from the background.
Additional Testing
1st test - I was momentarily able to get it to work with the 2 language custom background option but not the 1 tool/language or 2 tool options; however, after additional switching between the custom background options, it stopped working when switching back. I did notice the big "processing wheel" image showed during the attempt when it did work but that image didn't load after any other attempt.
2nd test - I created a new character and the first thing I did was set the "custom background" to 2 skills + 2 tools. After that, I selected the race, class, and all optional features. In this scenario both of my selected proficiencies showed as options under deft explorer; however, upon changing the custom background to 2 skills, 1 tool, 1 language at this point, deft explorer loses the previously selected skill and is no longer an option even after picking new skills for the background
3rd test - From the end of step the 2nd test, I deleted and readded the ranger class with all optional features and the custom background skills were not loading as options.
4th test - from the end of the 3rd test, I again deleted the class and then I changed races and added ranger again and all optional features. The custom background feature did not populate as an option.
From what I can tell, it seems like the custom background is only calculated by deft explorer if the custom background is selected prior race/class/optional features being selected except for the one test where it did work before switching it up and permanently disappearing. It's highly possible that the 1 exception was just my remembering the result incorrectly.
There's often a delay of 20 minutes or so after choosing (or changing?) a Custom Background. See if the proficiencies show up on your character sheet now.

Ah! Good to know. I'll make another one and see if it works overnight. If it's some sort of database query/sweep set to every 20 minutes, that could explain why I had the one iteration that worked which really threw me for a loop
