So in the process of updating a character to switch from a homebrew version of Way of the Cobalt Soul to the "official" version that went live today.
Under Mystic Erudition, the game text cites that you gain one skill proficiency, and that if you already have proficiency in the desired skill when this feature is gained, you get to double your prof bonus.
However, for the character in question, upon selecting any of the eligible skills, they're adding double their proficiency modifier in spite of not being trained in any of the skills.
For instance, if taking History at 6th level with an INT bonus of +2, she should have a +5 skill check modifier. However, on the character sheet she's got a +8 skill check modifier.
I’m playing a Way of the Cobalt Soul monk and having this problem. Now level 12 and two of the skills I selected seem to have given me expertise rather than proficiency which it should be so dnd beyond showing +12 when it should be +8 I think. (Have tried switching skills round and doesn’t make a difference, happens whichever skills I pick)
Anyone know how to fix this expertise bug (at least I think that’s what the problem is) or how to report it?
Also for the record: The issue can be worked around by manually setting the skill to "proficient" via override from the character sheet (web interface, bottom of the skills list).
The Scout Rogue doesn't have a problem with his coding because it is RAW.
"When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in the Nature and Survival skills if you don't already have it. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either of those proficiencies."
Which means that those abilities are actually considered expertise. It is the whole gimmick of Scout so it makes sense to give them expertise on these subjects. Let's be real, no other rogue chooses to have expertise on these skill checks.

Also if you have proficiency and choose gain the double bonus it opens up the original source of proficiency to allow another choice.
This isn't just a problem with the Cobalt Soul Monk. The Scout Rogue has that problem too.

For the record, the bug still has not been fixed.

As of November 2023 this bug has still not been fixed :(
