Exactly what the title says. The backgrounds NEED to have the option to pick from either version of each of the spells. Without that, they're officially bugged, as they can be selected for 2024 characters but provide the wrong version of spells.
The only backgrounds that add spells to spell lists are 2014 non-core books like Ravnica, Strixhaven, etc which are not updated to 2024 rules (and never will be unless republished specifically for 2024 rulesets) or are 3rd party which D&D Beyond is not legally allowed to update to 2024 rules without that 3rd party's permission.

Why does that matter? As far as I'm aware 2014 backgrounds are officially compatible with 2024 characters (unless they have been reprinted in the new books) whether they are "core" or not, therefore they should be granting the 2024 spells if that's what the character uses.

D&D Beyond have made it clear they're not updating non-core books to 2024. There have been numerous posts by mods on this forum. If you are using a 2014 book, you get the 2014 versions, if you want a 2024 version use a 2024 book.
Homebrewing your own update is easy enough. It's easier for the minority of people who really need this to just make a homebrew version on an as-needed basis, than it is for the overworked D&D Beyond devs to go through every background offering such and updating them (while also going through each spell to check which does and doesn't have a 2024 version). Also bearing in mind that the "add to spell list" function auto-generates the table showing what spells get added - meaning just adding the 2024 version of spells is going to make that table look messy-as-feck in the listings since the spells will be shown twice. Also noting in a few years 2014 won't be published anymore and may not even be available for new people on this site anymore, at which point the double-listing of spells will not only look gharish and horrible but may even cause confusion.
That's a lot of downsides and work for devs, just to avoid the 1-2 minutes it will take you to homebrew.

Could you point me towards one of these posts? I'm aware that the Dev's "to do" list is extremely long, and they will almost certainly never complete it, but from what I've seen if something is "legal" according to the new rules they intend to implement it correctly. They've already made some (most/all?) the non-core subclasses available and they have stated that they intend to make features like the warlock invocations from TCE available in the future.
The closest I've seen posted is that they won't update features that have been reprinted in the newer books, but that doesn't apply here as these backgrounds have not been reprinted (and may never be if they don't revisit the respective settings).
You are correct however to say that until they fix things it's not too difficult to homebrew a 2024 version, but while you have put out some very useful guides the homebrew feature is still intimidating to casual users, and not something they should have to deal with just to use paid for & current edition content. It would be better for customers and easier for everyone if DDB to just create 2024 versions of the background that grant the correct spells and mark the old backgrounds as "legacy" like they have with so much other content.
Yeah, I'm fully aware that homebrewing is a valid option to remake them for 2024. It's on my personal list of to-do items. But it shouldn't be necessary is my point, and as the backgrounds are still valid under the 2024 rules, it should be done. It would also be helpful for the servers for them to do it, because it wouldn't require every user who wants them to create their own homebrew copies.
