hi with the realease of the 2024 free rules i noticed that all of my characters weapons armors etc changed to fit the 2024 rules which is not what was promised, i do not like 2024 nor do i want my character auto converted to 2024
+1 on this, if this is intended it should be noted in the change logs at the very least.
Personally, I would have liked the option to opt out of 2024 in the campaign or character options. At my age and family situation, mastering the new rule set is not an option at this time, I will cancel my master tier subscription and leave DNDB for another digital tool set provider if i cant use the books I have bought and used for the past 10 years. (dont give me mandatory reading assignment homework, I dont like it)
They actually specifically called out that all weapons would be updated like this because all it does is show the mastery property name. Since 2014 characters don't get weapon masteries anyway, it makes no difference to them. You can still use it as you did before, damage dice and other properties remain unchanged. Armor should be unchanged as well.
I realize it's not a bug - it's a feature - but I agree, it's confusing for my players. We are playing a 3-year-old campaign in 2014 rules and we're not going to switch now, and I have to remind them to ignore that part of the description. Homebrew monsters have the ability to toggle between 2014 and 2024 stat blocks, so homebrew weapons should, as well!
My players are constantly confused by these changes. Some legacy items show up and they dutifully select those items, but others (like the rapier) don't, so they select the 2024 version, and then try to use the vex property in game. I have half my group veteran players with 2014 that get tripped up by the changes, and the other half newbies that have no idea what the differences are or why they should/or shouldn't pay attention too some of them. I just have to re-explain every session... no we don't use vex, etc.
And EVERY SINGLE player messed up their characters in some way during character creation. After 4 sessions I just noticed the dwarf fighter shorted himself a point of Str because he chose the 2024 background soldier instead of scrolling down and selecting the 2014 solder background.
Some of the changes between the rules are pretty major (like weapon properties) but others are pretty small and easy to overlook. Like the wizard now starts with fewer spells in their spellbook at first level, dwarves have a movement speed of 30 instead of 25.
Super annoying. Its like a virus that reinfects my player's character sheets every time they level up or try to make selections on their characters.
If you have to explain every session, that's a listening issue on their end.
The backgrounds thing, along with a few other issues (such as updated vs 2014 spells being selectable) can now be helped by players unchecking the Core Rules checkbox in their character settings.
Wizard starts with the same number of spells in their spellbook, and with an Int of 16-17 would prepare the same number of spells at level 1. Dwarf movement did indeed increase. Again, that part can be aided by the checkbox mentioned above.
Diagnosis: Make your players uncheck that box and it'll fix 90% of your problems. The rest involves actually getting to know the rules and how they apply, which has always been necessary in every edition of D&D.

The only issue is that Lance has a downgrade from 2014 from a d12 to a d10, and if that is a big change if you wanted to keep the chunkier dice.
It also changed the elemental affinity for sorcerers. It added the elemental resistance for an hour and made the element selectable.
It would be nice if I could delete the part where it gives the 2024 mastery features. It's just going to confuse the players who don't use them.
Has there been a fix for this bug already? It's confusing for players.

Wizards DO start with 6 spells in their spellbook in each edition. Where in the heck did I get that from?
See? Mass confusion on everyone's part. Including the DM's.
