I created a homebrew item that grants the use of a large number of spells. Essentially the bearer (who must be a Wizard) can cast any spell in the tome if attuned to it and if they supply the spell slot. There are no charges and the item as designed will look as though the character can cast at will but the reality is that they will be required to supply a spell slot.
The problem is that now that I have 31 spells attached to the item - I cannot add any more. It doesn't give any error - I search and find the spell and then when I try to add it - it doesn't return to the item details it says on the spell add page.
Is this by design or is this a bug? In my case this powerful item will have more than 31 spells.
Hello Vanya_42nd, that is correct. There is a limit to the number of spells that can currently be added onto an item. I'll go ahead and mark this thread as Request for now. Thanks so much for sharing!
For now here's what I have done. I created a second "item" that is part of the same item. I then required attunement for both items. I created a "Legendary Feat" and set the attunement slots to 4. In the text I indicated that only someone attuning to a legendary item that requires 2 slots due to DNDBeyond mechanics can use the feat. I then assigned the feat to my player's sheet and attuned the two halves of the book. It works "at will" but he knows he has to burn slots. So the work around is acceptable for now.
To summarize these are the two problems I had:
An item should be able to have more than 31 spells - perhaps that's a checkbox or other option needed.
An item should be able to grant a spell that uses the caster's own slots rather than charges or just "at will" options.
it is kind of a bummer that we can't add more than 31, and it seems like such an arbitrary cutoff number too its getting on my OCD nerves haha. Yall should really fix it!
Same problem here. I created a scrollcase with the purpose of adding every spellscroll to my Spell list. I was about to add the two last scrolls to it when I reached the limit. Hope DDB remove this limitation soon.

In this thread from 2017, the limit was raised from 20 to 30.
