I'm creating a sub class of wizard and adding spells with options:
Consumes Spell Slot: yes
Counts as Known Spell: yes
Always Prepared: no
I expect that the spell would appear in the character's spell book and count against the number of known spells but not be prepared so they can select which known spells from their book to prepare. What I see in the spell book is:
Prepared Spells: 0/7(1 Known)*
And nothing under that, and on the character sheet the spell still appears as though it were prepared.
(the Consumes Spell Slot option seems to function correctly at least)
That's interesting, though the options would appear to imply the behavior I'm expecting... I set Always Prepared to No yet it still is in the character's spells tab and I set Counts as Known Spell to Yes and it is not in the spell book, if the options did what they seem to be labeled as then even though I am trying to do something that has not been done previously, it should still work. Unless I am not understanding the meaning of these options, though they do look self-explanatory.

I'm having the same issue with a Druid homebrew. I'm attempting to add additional spells to the known spells list, without having access to them without prepping them. Doesn't seem to work as it implies with drop down option of "always prepared"
I've even created a fully custom hombrew spell set only to druid access to try it out, still doesn't work. and no options available for "requires prep" in homebrew spell options either.
For now i'm adding them, setting the "always prepared: no" for the day it gets fixed. and simply renaming them using the customize feature with a "[-] spell name" or "[+] spell name" if prepared or unprepared that day. Hopefully they fix this soon. Otherwise i'll try to check-in in person at PAX Unplugged this year.
You are trying to do something that an official wizard subclass has never done, so the tools aren't really set up to do it.
Clerics, Druids, Wizards all prepare spells. Thats exactly what "always prepared" implies.
Wizards do prepare spells. That is correct. "Always prepared" is not limitied to that though. If it was the same as preparing spells normally, they wouldn't need a feature would they?

Luckily, your problem has a much easier solution. Just add the spell you want to "additional specific spells" under basic information.
OP can follow the same steps, but spells will still have to be added to spellbook manually and individually. May not be a good solution if they wanted a low level spell to be available only after reaching a higher level.

Already tried that, it was the first method I tried. Still doesn't work. Just adds it "dumbly" like any other method, again, not to a list to prepare from.
Like i said, I'm adding them as part of a druid subclass. More specifically based part of a feature option. Different choice gives different set of spells. Can't add them under basic info anyway, even if it did work.

I think you misunderstood. At the bottom of basic information for the subclass, there is a text box labeled "additional specific spells." Any spell you add there can be learned or prepared (depends on class) like any other class spell.
You don't have to create a class feature. You can't do it that way, as you have pointed out.

I'm aware of what you're talking about. I think you're not listening. You have multiple people telling you that it doesn't work.
I get that it should, I'm telling you it doesn't. It's not about knowing where the dialog is. It's about the code utilizing the dialog not behaving properly. I'm telling you that it doesn't work the way described.
The class feature "additional spells" box locks the spells in as "always prepared." There is no further customization or rule sets.
And again beyond a set list, I want a subset of spells to be available based on a feature choice. Meaning separate spell lists that show up. It works as far as assigning the spells per choice, they show up when you've made the choice.
Under the feature option I've used "add spells" and in the spell settings chose • Consume Spell slot: Yes • Count as Known Spell: Yes • Always prepared: No
The spells just show up as options, don't show up in "prepare known spells" dialog, and are available to cast at all times.
Ok. My mistake. Add specific spell doesn't work for prepare casters. I guess they coded it differently for them to make the official subclasses easier.
It definitely needs to be changed to work the same way. There are already modifiers to add spells as always prepared, we don't need 2 ways to do it (especially when 1 of the 2 ways takes away from other homebrew options).
The add specific spells functions slightly differently for different caster classes and uses the Wizards of the Coast rules for subclasses of that class.
As an example, for a Cleric, any additional spells added there are "domain spells" and are "always prepared"
For a Wizard, they are additional Wizard school spells and are just added to their pool of spells that can be learned and prepared. They aren't automatically known.
Ok, so specific additional spell is still an option for the OP depending on whether or not the feature adds the spell later than when the wizard can learn spells of that level (since OP hasn't commented since I suggested that option).
It is still annoying that clerics, druids, and paladins can't have spells added as options to prepare as opposed to always prepared (not that I have any intention of making something that different than official subclasses currently).
