Firearms are sort of special. They require special training beyond just martial weapon proficiency, and most campaigns don't allow them.
I do think it should be possible for DMs to allow them as a kensei weapon (which it currently isn't). Just remember that they are not normal martial ranged weapons, and it is not a bug that they can't be selected.
I know they are not the same in that matter but choosing a Kensei weapon gets the proficiency with the weapon and DMG calls them martial ranged weapons so according to the rules of kensei weapon they can be chosen. I think there should be a campaign setting: that would allow you to ban or allow firearms in the campaign ( for the DM only of course). Also when I say firearms I mean also the firearm that Matt Mercer made.

i think kensai monk should be able to choose a firearm as there kensai weapon because they are listed as martial ranged weapon in the DMG.
so if the d&d beyond team sees this: please add it as an option.
but what do you think should kensai monk be able to choose a firearm as there kensai weapon?
