A while back I joined a new campaign. I hadn’t used beyond much before, but others in the campaign had most of the books on here and shared them with me, so I made my character (a scout rogue) without any troubles.
Recently I joined a new campaign, but when I went to make my new character, it was only giving me the basic options (I.e. it would only let me choose an evoker wizard rather than the abjurer I had planned to play).
When other people share content with you in a campaign, are you only allowed to use it for one character, or is there something else going on here?
Content sharing is on a campaign basis - it only applies to characters you create as part of that campaign. So if content sharing is not turned on for that second campaign, then you are limited to what is available via the Basic Rules, your purchases, or your homebrew. Similarly, if content sharing was on for both campaigns, and someone in Campaign A had Xanathar's, but no one in Campaign B did, then you wouldn't be able to use Xanathar's in Campaign B.
