I was testing out the variant feral Tiefling and when I was going through the levels, I discovered that at level 4, ASI is not replaced with feral and instead I can only choose ASI or Feat, no option to choose feral, even though 1 page previous, on the race select screen, it sais that it should replace it.
5e has a bad habit of using identical terms to refer to similar but separate rules. Like the ASI race trait and the ASI class feature or the two weapon fighting bonus action and the two weapon fighting style. Then there are other confusing name problems like weapon attacks without a weapon and spell attacks that aren't spells...
Yeah, the bit that confused me was the fact that the Feral Tiefling already has a Ability Score Increase if +1 Int and +2 Dex, which is replaced by the exact same values with the Feral trait from the variant feral Tiefling..
Ability Score Increase
Your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Dexterity score increases by 2.
Feral. Your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Dexterity score increases by 2. This trait replaces the Ability Score Increase trait.

Feral tiefling and variant feral tiefling should never have been separate options. In fact, variant tiefling and variant feral tiefling should have been a single race (as feral is just listed a variant trait for tiefling in the book).

Am I missing something obvious?
If you're referring to
That doesn't mean your ASI on level up is replaced, but instead replaces the Ability Score Increase trait from the base tiefling
