Forgive me if this is a stupid question, or if it has been answered before (I'm new to DMing), but I was noticing an issue regarding players claiming characters in a campaign.
I've created a campaign page and a dozen unassigned characters for players to choose from, and I noticed that when a player claims one, that character disappears from my own personal character roster. They essentially take my character from me, as opposed to just using a character I've created (what I thought it was).
Is that just how the system works? I was hoping to play this campaign with a few groups, but if my campaign's characters keep disappearing, do I need to constantly be making copies of each unassigned character so that other groups can use them?
On that same note, is there a way for me to stop players from editing the characters I've created once they claim them?
That is how the system works, correct. The player becomes the new owner of the character. If you'd like to keep that character to use for yourself later, or to re-use in another situation, I would recommend creating a copy, and putting one version or the other available as an Unclaimed character in the campaign.
There is no way to stop a player from editing a character they have claimed, as they are now the owner of that character.
If you would prefer for your players to only be able to see the sheet, and not edit it in any way, you could provide them with a share link for the character sheet, as an alternative option. They will not be able to update or change anything on the sheet, and it will remain as your character.

Okay, thank you! That's good to know. And that last bit is a nice solution as well. Thank you!
