i purchased a sub, that allows me to save characters and all that stuff.
in terms of content though, what is available for free? it looks like i can access the rules and the one adventure that i purchased.
however, i cant tell what i have purchased(aka things that are only available after you buy a product like rulebook/adventure/dm guide/ etc) and what is available for free. i cant even see anywhere in my account what adventures/modules i bought so i have to click around until i find it. all of this makes me confused on what the benefit of MM/DMGuide?players handbook is when i can seem to be able to access the rules regardless.
In terms of content, you get the basic rules including everything that WOTC has officially released as free. All of that is integrated into D&D Beyond. The things you purchase are unlocked, so they will show up in a global search with everything else. To see what you've purchased, go to your account and look at the Marketplace tab there rather than the Marketplace tab on the main site. To see the content in your compendium, click on the Compendium tab on the main site and choose either Rules or Adventures, depending on what you bought. Then you will be able to read each of the books you've purchased. The Spells, Items, and Monsters tabs will have all your purchased content mixed in with the free content. There have been requests for a "source" filter, and I can't remember what was said one way or the other. I am sure it is in the queue somewhere down the line.
If you can search and access materials such as Bigby's Hand or the Rod of the Pact Keeper, then you have access to the PHB and DMG purchased material. If you purchased them or if you are in a shared campaign in which someone else purchased them, then it's working as it ought to be. Most spells are in the free stuff. Some monsters, and some magic items are as well. If you can live without those, then you're fine. A Google search will likely take you to a place that has a list of all the things that are in the free materials. I think someone even may have made a post about that here somewhere.
thats disappointing... and i take it theres no way for me to know ahead of buying a campaign whether or not it contains content i have no access to?
which sorta forces me to eventually buy all the rulebooks.
I believe only Lost Mines of Phandelver has all the monsters in the appendix. The other adventurers, the appendix contains only the monsters not present in the MM.

can someone clarify the distinction?
Only the Basic Rules and the Elemental Evil Companion are for free.
You can check your orders in Account >> Marketplace.
ok so, having not purchased any of the rulebooks, what limitations are applied to me when i run a campaign that i purchased in marketplace?
or does an adventure automatically include any/all required rules/material, like links to skills/spells/monsters/mechanics etc?
