1. Characters will never be 'lost', even if a subscription lapses. These character slots (above the free limit) will gray out and only remain unavailable until the subscription was once again active. 2. I believe the subscription does auto-renew. I will work to verify this and reply if I am mistaken.
so does that mean we wont be able to access our characters?
if your subscription lapses, you will be given an opportunity to select what characters remain unlocked.

My subscription runs out in a few days but if I go to the marketplace, the only option I have is to cancel. Where's the link for renewing?
There is a lot of confusion whether there is an auto renew (as in, I am also confused).
Worst case scenario, your sub ends, you have to re-sub, you lose nothing but convenience (maybe have to re-enable content sharing).
Losing a sub will not change or delete any characters or hombrew collection.
